Game Story
INGLEWOOD, California (Ticker) -- Shaquille O'Neal voiced his
displeasure with New York center Patrick Ewing's union
leadership earlier this week. Tonight, he displayed it against
Chris Dudley and the rest of the Knicks.
O'Neal's thunderous dunk over Dudley midway through the fourth
quarter sparked a decisive spurt and resulted in the overmatched
center's ejection as the Lakers posted a 99-91 victory over the
slumping Knicks.
O'Neal, who had 21 points and nine rebounds, gave Los Angeles an
80-75 lead with a wicked two-handed dunk before coming down on
Dudley and pushing him to the floor. Dudley retaliated by
pegging the ensuing inbounds pass off O'Neal's back from about
30 feet, earning an ejection with 6:13 to play.
"You saw it," Dudley said. "I got frustrated, threw the ball. I
didn't know I was going to get ejected. He pushed me and I
threw the ball at him. If it was vice versa, he wouldn't have
gotten ejected."
"Other people may think that's physical, but I'm used to that,"
O'Neal said. "It was a fun game. It was a tough game. It was a
good win for us."
Glen Rice, who scored 19 points, followed with a pair of free
throws and a dunk before former Knick Derek Harper sank
consecutive 3-pointers to give Los Angeles an 89-79 lead with
2:58 left.
"He made two big (3-pointers)," said Van Gundy. "I coached him
for a little bit and he's a clutch player and always has been."
Kobe Bryant scored 29 points and Rodman collected seven and 12
rebounds for Los Angeles, which snapped a two-game losing skid.
"We're taking steps," said Bryant. "We all knew New York was
going to come in here and try to play a physical game. That is
something we talked about here in the locker room before the
game so we were prepared for it."
Late in the third quarter, Rodman got entangled and thrown to
the floor by Knicks forward Kurt Thomas but refused to
retaliate. Thomas was ejected after being charged with a
flagrant-2 foul and Rodman sank 1-of-2 free throws to give Los
Angeles a 72-65 lead entering the fourth quarter.
"I don't think I should have been ejected from the game," said
Thomas. "But I don't really know the rules of how it goes with
flagrant-1 and flagrant-2.
"He kicked me and they called a double foul before. I didn't
think I should get a foul for being kicked. That's something
he's done for a number of years; he's always kicking. I just
defend myself if I'm ever done like that."
Ewing had 20 points on 9-of-26 shooting and grabbed 13 rebounds
before fouling out with 24 seconds left. O'Neal had bashed
Ewing for his handling of the lockout situation in an item in
Sports Illustrated, claiming that Ewing had "messed up the
lockout."
"I didn't make any comments," Ewing said. "I don't care what
people say. I did my job and that's over with now. It's all
about playing and getting wins."
Latrell Sprewell scored 15 of his 25 points in the fourth
quarter for New York, which completed a 1-2 road trip and has
lost four of its last five games.
Allan Houston collected 16 points and Larry Johnson added 12 for
the Knicks, who shot 44 percent (34-of-77) and committed 13
turnovers.
Houston scored five points during an 11-4 run as the Knicks
jumped out to a 22-13 lead with 2:02 remaining in the first
quarter.
Bryant sank a 17-footer with 3.9 seconds left to close the gap
to 27-21 entering the second quarter. Rick Fox made a 16-foot
jumper and a 3-pointer before Derek Fisher's 19-footer put Los
Angeles in front, 28-27, with 9:54 left in the first half.
Marcus Camby's layup gave New York its last lead of the game,
29-28, with 9:04 remaining before Rice took control.
After being held scoreless through the first 12 minutes, Rice
scored 11 points in the second period, including nine during a
17-4 spurt that put Los Angeles ahead for good, 45-33, with 3:30
to go.
Rodman, an absentee from practice on Saturday, made 5-of-7 free
throws, including a pair with 2:35 to play that extended Los
Angeles' lead to 91-81.
"I liked what Dennis was doing today so he got some time," said
Los Angeles coach Kurt Rambis. "We had a nice discussion,
Dennis and I did. I believe we are on the same page now. We
understand each other and I am looking forward to him being a
very productive member of this ballclub."
Van Gundy challenged Rodman to make the shots by having Johnson
foul him just prior to an in-bounds pass. After calmly sinking
both free throws, Rodman glared at Van Gundy as he ran back
downcourt.
"He's a dirty player," Van Gundy said. "I mea, he's a great
player but he plays dirty. It always amazes me that he's always
the one involved but it's always the other player that gets
picked on. But again, he gets the biggest ovation coming out
before the game so we're (bleep) backwards. We should be
cheering and we're not. That's just how it is."
