Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Otherwise silent David Wesley and Derrick Coleman keyed a pair of huge third-quarter bursts as the Charlotte Hornets routed the Cleveland Cavaliers, 104-85, for their eighth straight home win.
Wesley scored eight of his nine points in a 14-0 spurt that opened the period and gave the Hornets the lead for good. Coleman had six of his seven in a 15-3 run that closed the quarter and extended the lead to 76-63.
Rookie Brad Miller scored 24 points off the bench to lead the Hornets, who have won eight straight games at Charlotte Coliseum after a 1-4 start. Charlotte has won six of seven overall.
"I feel a certain amount of excitement but we've got a long way to go," said Hornets coach Paul Silas. "We started off in a hole, so every game is critical. ... When we lose one game, it's like losing two. We've got to continue to win."
"The Hornets have a rejuvenated spirit and lots of enthusiasm," said Cleveland coach Mike Fratello.
Wesley Person scored 20 points for the Cavaliers, who fell to 3-9 on the road. Cleveland was without starting point guard Brevin Knight, who was sidelined with a bruised right knee, and committed 18 turnovers, leading to 28 Charlotte points.
In the third period, Charlotte shot 73 percent (11-of-15) from the field and held Cleveland to 17 percent (3-of-18) and just 10 points.
"We came out in the second half and started rebounding and playing with more emotion," Miller said.
"We tried to stop the bleeding but just couldn't get it done," said Cavaliers guard Derek Anderson. "Our rotation was slow and we couldn't get out to stop their shots."
The Hornets trailed 53-44 at halftime, but Wesley had a pair of 3-pointers and a jumper in the spurt that opened the third quarter and gave Charlotte a 58-53 lead with 7:06 remaining. Cleveland did not score until Person's basket with 6:40 to go.
"I think they went 11 possessions in the second half without scoring," Silas added. "David Wesley started picking up the point all the way down and that made a difference."
The Cavaliers got within 61-60 on a basket by Danny Ferry with 4:47 left but managed just three free throws the rest of the period. Coleman scored six points as the Hornets closed with a rush, opening a 16-point advantage entering the final quarter.
Cleveland never threatened and Charlotte opened its largest lead at 102-78 on a dunk by rookie Ricky Davis with 2:23 to play.
Eddie Jones scored 15 points, Chuck Person added 14 and Davis 11 for the Hornets, who shot 54 percent (36-of-67). Elden Campbell had 10 rebounds and Eldridge Recasner collected nine assists for Charlotte, held a 26-17 advantage in points from the line.
"This team is playing with a lot of heart and drive," Jones said. "The more we play with each other, the more this team will grow and win."
Shawn Kemp scored 14 points and Ferry added 12 for the Cavs, who shot 42 percent (31-of-74), including 5-of-18 from 3-point range.
"We lost our composure a little bit," Ferry said. "We have to be able to sustain things when Kemp is out of the game."
Kemp scored eight points and Wesley Person seven in the opening quarter, which ended with Cleveland holding a 29-20 lead. The Cavs could have opened it up in the second quarter if not for Miller, who scored 15 points and allowed Charlotte to head to halftime trailing 53-44.
