Game Story
SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- The legend of Vince Carter continues to
grow.
The heralded rookie swingman shook off one of his worst
performances of the season to hit the game's key basket as the
surprising Toronto Raptors edged the San Antonio Spurs, 93-91.
After going 3-for-13 from the field over the first three
periods, Carter righted the ship in the fourth, scoring eight of
his 14 points. His final basket came with 17 seconds left and
gave Toronto a 91-89 edge.
"In the huddle Coach (Butch Carter) drew up the play and told
everybody where to go, then he said 'get it to Vince and he'll
win the game for us.' He said 'it's up to you.' I was surprised
because I had been struggling. It was a great game, a great
win, over a great team. It should give us a lot of confidence."
"He's a special rookie," said teammate Kevin Willis. "He's like
a Tim Duncan, Kobe Bryant, and those kind of you guys. There's
no doubt he's for real. He keeps his head and wants the ball in
those kinds of situations. He got it and put it down."
After Willis and Doug Christie sank free throws around two by
Avery Johnson, the Spurs had a last chance to knot the contest
in the final seconds. But Sean Elliott got tangled up just
beyond the 3-point arc and never got off a shot.
Dee Brown led Toronto with 23 points, including five 3-pointers,
and Charles Oakley added 13. The Raptors (13-14) have won seven
of their last nine games and posted only their second win in
seven all-time meetings with the Spurs.
David Robinson had 24 points and 16 rebounds for San Antonio but
frontcourt mate and 1998 Rookie of the Year Tim Duncan had one
of his worst games of the season with five points in 38 minutes.
"I played horribly tonight," Duncan said. "I made some bad
decisions. ... I played horribly. ... I could never get in good
position down there. I thought we executed well down the
stretch, but Vince Carter hit a big shot for them."
Carter, who leads the Raptors at 17.5 points per game, is the
early favorite for Rookie of the Year honors. He has been
especially strong of late, averaging 23.1 points per contest
over the last seven games, including a career-high 32 points in
a loss to Houston on Thursday.
Despite missing 10 of his first 13 shots, Carter stepped up in
the fourth quarter. Elliott drained a long 3-pointer with 5:35
to go that put San Antonio ahead 82-77. Willis hit two free
throws 45 seconds later and added a 16-footer that brought the
Raptors within 82-81.
Christie sank two from the line with 2:47 left to give Toronto
an 83-82 edge. Elliott answered with a three-point play but
Oakley buried a 16-footer to knot the contest with 96 seconds
remaining.
Carter then took over, sinking an 11-footer from the left
baseline. Duncan made one free throw but missed his second
opportunity and Carter grabbed the rebound. With the defense
keying on him, Carter found Christie along along the right
baseline and he drained a 19-footer to extend the lead to 89-86.
Undaunted, Elliott knotted the contest with a 3-pointer from the
right wing with 35 seconds to go. After a timeout, Carter
worked his way free and calmly sank a 16-footer to give Toronto
the lead for good. After a miss by Mario Elie, Willis made one
free throw with 8.8 seconds left.
In an attempt to prevent the tying 3-pointer, Toronto fouled
Johnson, who made both attempts with 5.7 seconds to go. Christie
was fouled on the inbounds pass and made 1-of-2 from the line
with 4.4 seconds left. With a chance to tie, Elliott dribbled
down the center of the court, got to the top of the 3-point arc
but was fronted by Brown and never got the shot off.
"Carter did a real good job on the last two possessions," said
Butch Carter. "I knew they were going to double-team him. So on
the first possession we got the ball to him and when he drew the
double he threw it to Doug and Christie hit the shot. Then on
the last possession the double-team never came."
San Antonio made 5-of-10 3-point attempts, held a 43-37
rebounding edge and blocked nine shots but was done in by 19
turnovers.
Toronto shot just 43 percent (35-of-81) from the field but
committed just eight turnovers.
