Game Story


CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Reserves Johnny Newman and Bobby Sura
keyed a decisive second-quarter burst as the Cleveland Cavaliers
moved two games over .500 for the first time in a month with a
113-86 victory over the reeling Boston Celtics. 


The Cavaliers, who defeated the Celtics for the 10th time in 13
meetings, broke open the game late in the second quarter with a
23-9 run.   Newman had eight of his 13 points in the burst,
including a 3-pointer and three-point play.  Sura added five of
his eight. 


Cleveland, which has won 24 straight games in which it has
scored 100 points, got 23 of its 32 second-quarter points from
its reserves. 


The Cavaliers improved to 13-11, marking the first time they
have been more than one game over .500 since February 20, when
they were 5-3.  Cleveland shot 58 percent from the field in the
contest, including 61 percent (22-of-36) in the second half. 


"I guess I try to stay positive and stay upbeat," Celtics coach
Rick Pitino said. "But that is humiliating defense.  I have seen
the Washington Generals play better defense than that.  It
reaches a point where I won't be humiliated.  I am going to
watch this film and if people are humiliating the Boston Celtics
they will not start tomorrow or tomorrow will be their last
day." 


Starter Shawn Kemp had a huge third quarter and finished with 17
points and nine rebounds in 28 minutes.  Wesley Person added 19
points as six Cavaliers scored in double figures. 


Both Kemp and Person chose to recognize the effort of the bench.


"You have to give the bench a standing ovation.  They shot the
ball well and made it easy for us," Kemp said. 


"We were kind of flat coming out early and the second team came
out and gave us a big lead," Person added. "If we get the kind
of effort we got from our bench we can be a pretty good team." 


Antoine Walker scored 22 points for Boston, which has dropped
nine of 10 games overall and nine straight on the road.  The
Celtics are 3-13 away from the FleetCenter. 


The matchup was the first between the teams since Cleveland
shipped Vitaly Potapenko to Boston for Andrew DeClercq and a
future first-round pick. Cleveland has won five of seven games
with DeClercq, who had 16 points and six rebounds in 22 minutes.
Potapenko had 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Celtics, who are
just 1-6 since the deal. 


DeClercq began as if he had something to prove, scoring eight
points and grabbing five rebounds in the opening quarter as
Cleveland seized a 22-17 advantage. 


"I don't think there was much revenge, there was a lot at stake
in the playoff race," DeClercq said. "Our bench did a great job
handling the press.  They got a lot of easy baskets and really
turned it up on the defensive end." 


The Celtics got within a basket 90 seconds into the second
quarter before Cleveland's reserves took over.  Danny Ferry
ignited the run with a 14-footer and Person capped it with a
layup with one minute remaining in the half.   The Cavaliers
made 13-of-21 shots in the period and led 54-38 at the break. 


Boston opened the second half with a 12-4 burst to draw within
58-50. Cleveland's lead was 60-52 with 8:14 left when a 14-1
burst put the game out of reach.  Person capped that spurt with
a 3-pointer with 3:08 left. 


Kemp scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the third
quarter.  He joined fellow starters DeClercq, Person and Brevin
Knight on the bench over the final 12 minutes.
