Game Story


TORONTO (Ticker) -- Rookie Vince Carter helped the Toronto
Raptors extend the longest winning streak in franchise history
by ending a losing streak against the New York Knicks that had
lasted the franchise's history. 


Carter collected 23 points and 12 rebounds and had four clutch
free throws and an offensive rebound in overtime, leading the
Raptors to an 85-81 win over the Knicks, their fifth straight
victory. 


The Raptors surpassed their previous longest winning streak of
four, established from January 21-29, 1998.  They improved to
7-2 in the new Air Canada Centre with their fifth straight home
win. 


"We're on a streak and gaining confidence, espcially to beat a
team like the Knicks," Carter said.  "That's a whole lot of
confidence for us.  It's like a dream as a rookie to come in and
help a team that wasn't doing well last year and turn the team
around." 


It also was Toronto's first home win against New York.  Since
entering the NBA in 1995, the Raptors had lost six home games to
the Knicks, who blew a seven-point lead in the final five-plus
minutes of regulation and fell to 11-2 in the all-time series. 


"It's new for my young guys and it's the first time they been in
a game like this," Toronto coach Butch Carter said.  "Our young
guys kept getting on the glass to give us a chance.  Other teams
are finding out that we got young legs." 


"We haven't made significant shots at the end of the game,"
Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy said.  "We were prepared and played
real hard, but it was our inability just to finish." 


Patrick Ewing had 21 points and 15 rebounds for the Knicks, but
he missed crucial free throws late in regulation and overtime.
Ewing returned Saturday against Boston after missing nearly all
of the last seven games with left Achilles tendinitis. 


Knicks forward Marcus Camby returned to Toronto for the first
time and was soundly booed.  Camby, who was dealt to New York
last June for Charles Oakley, had six points and four rebounds. 


"I just wish we got the win and everything would've been
complete," Canby said.  "It was different. I didn't deserve it.
In the two years I was here, I wasn't wanting to leave." 


After a basket by New York's Latrell Sprewell opened overtime,
Carter made four straight free throws to give Toronto the lead
for good at 79-77 with 3:18 remaining. 


Sprewell missed a pair of free throws and Doug Christie made a
jumper to widen the lead to four points.  Larry Johnson split a
pair of foul shots to cut the deficit to 81-78 but Oakley made
his only basket of the game with 50 seconds to go. 


Ewing scored and was fouled with 39 seconds left.  But he missed
a free throw that could have pulled the Knicks within a basket.
On Toronto's next possession, Carter rebounded Dee Brown's miss
and dribbled along the baseline and away from traffic, killing
the clock.  Oakley was fouled and made two free throws to seal
it. 


"Oak played like Oak," Ewing said.  "He made a big shot at the
end to put them up by five and then he hit his free throws.  He
did a good job of rebounding all night long." 


Former Knick John Thomas scored 13 points and Christie and Brown
added 12 apiece for the Raptors, who shot just 30 percent
(31-of-102) but held a 65-44 rebounding advantage.  Oakley also
had 12 rebounds and Christie grabbed 10. 


"It's a big win for us, to win five in a row," Thomas said.  "It
was kind of a ugly game from the standpoint of there was a lot
of missed shots.  Guys are working hard on crashing the boards
and getting us second shots." 


Allan Houston scored 17 points and Chris Childs added 12 for the
Knicks, who shot 39.5 percent (30-of-76) and committed 22
turnovers.  New York made just 2-of-7 free throws in overtime. 


"Our inability to rebound and our missed free throw were the
difference," Van Gundy said.  "When we do those things we win.
Our defense was great we played with great energy.  It's
disappointing to have the lead, but we couldn't make our free
throws." 


Ewing's jumper with 5:21 left in the fourth quarter gave New
York a 72-65 lead.  Christie made a 3-pointer and Camby scored
for the Knicks' last basket of regulation with 4:03 remaining. 


The Raptors scored the next seven points, capped by a free throw
by Carter for a 75-74 lead with 1:43 left.  Ewing could have
given the Knicks the lead, but he went 1-of-2 from the line with
45 seconds to go. 


Carter, who was 7-of-24 from the field, missed a jumper and a
drive on Toronto's final fourth-quarter possession.  New York
had a chance to win, but Brown made a steal and Carter nearly
banked in a 65-footer at the horn. 


"It's just one game, (but) I can sense a little bit of a rivalry
here," Camby said.  "There was a lot of trash talk and things
you don't normally see.  But we played them again real soon and
I'm looking forward to it."
