Game Story
MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- It took over a year, but the Los Angeles
Clippers finally found a way to win on the road.
The Clippers snapped a 20-game road losing streak and won for
just the second time this season as Darrick Martin scored a
season-high 22 points in a 100-85 victory over the slumping
Minnesota Timberwolves.
Maurice Taylor added 20 points and rookie Michael Olowokandi
grabbed a season-high 16 rebounds for the Clippers, who won on
the road for the first time in 13 tries this season and for the
first time since since a 107-102 victory in Golden State on
March 17, 1998.
Los Angeles (2-22) also snapped a nine-game skid against
Minnesota dating to November 10, 1996.
"We were able to match their intensity," Olowokandi said. "We
were aggressive and we didn't hang our heads. We need to win
three or four games in a row -- and just play basketball -- to
regain our confidence. This game was an indication of where we
are and what we're capable of doing."
Kevin Garnett scored 27 points and Terrell Brandon netted 14 and
11 assists for Minnesota, which lost for the fifth time in its
last six games.
"We got totally dominated today," commented Minnesota coach Flip
Saunders. "You can try to spin it a lot of different ways, but
they got off to a good start. We didn't jump on them right away
-- which you want to do with a team that's been on the road and
hasn't been able to win. You need to jump on them right away and
create your own energy, and we didn't do that."
After a dunk by Garnett with 3:33 left in the second quarter
gave the Timberwolves their last lead at 40-39, Los Angeles
surprisingly took over.
Lamond Murray converted a layup, fueling a 13-5 surge to close
the half. Martin's three-point play gave the Clippers a 52-45
advantage at intermission. Murray had six points in the burst.
Murray scored 19 points off the bench to lead a dominant effort
by Clippers reserves, who outscored Minnesota's bench, 47-19.
Rodney Rogers and Lorenzen Wright contributed 14 points and nine
rebounds apiece for Los Angeles.
Along with Olowokandi on the inside, the Clippers held a healthy
52-35 rebounding edge.
"I feel very good. We went after it today," Los Angeles coach
Chris Ford said. "We were very physical on the defensive end.
Our big guys pounded the boards, and that was the difference in
the game."
"Our big guys are the reason we won tonight," Martin said. "They
battled, they rebounded, they played both ends of the floor very
well, and they made big plays down the stretch."
The Wolves got within 55-51 early in the third quarter as
Brandon nailed a running jumper.
But a thunderous dunk by Murray and a pair of free throws from
Taylor triggered a 10-1 spurt that pushed the lead to 65-52 with
with 5:42 remaining in the period.
Murray finished 6-of-14 from the floor and also had six rebounds
and six assists.
The Clippers held a 79-66 advantage entering the final quarter
before Minnesota tried to rally. Bobby Jackson's lay-in brought
the Wolves within 82-73 with 8:36 to play.
But Martin drilled a 3-pointer and Rogers made a layup, pushing
the lead to 87-73 with 7:16 remaining. Los Angeles led by as
many as 17 points in the final minutes.
With Sherman Douglas sidelined with a strained left quadricep,
Martin went virtually the entire way at point guard, playing 47
minutes. He connected on 7-of-16 shots and also handed out seven
assists.
"Darrick played a great game," added Ford. "He knocked down some
big shots and made good decisions."
The Clippers shot 46 percent (36-of-79) while Minnesota finished
at 40 percent (33-of-82).
