Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Mark Bryant scored the first four points of a key 6-0 run midway through overtime and Brent Barry made four crucial free throws in the final 6.3 seconds as the Chicago Bulls held off the Boston Celtics, 95-92.
Boston led twice in the extra session, the final time at 87-85 after Ron Mercer hit a 17-foot jumper from the right sideline. Bryant tied it with a jumper from the left side and gave the Bulls the lead for good with a similar shot moments later.
A jumper by Dana Barros with 53 seconds to play cut the deficit to 91-89 and Toni Kukoc's turnover gave the Celtics possession. But Antoine Walker, who was 2-of-15 from the field, missed a short jumper and Barry pushed Chicago's advantage back to four points by hitting two free throws.
Barros connected on a 3-pointer with 4.9 seconds remaining to bring Boston within a point before Barry connected on two more foul shots with 2.9 seconds remaining to seal the victory -- and Boston's eighth loss in nine games.
"This win means a lot beacause we've been struggling in close games," Bulls coach Tim Floyd said. "We haven't won in a while on the road and I think this does something for our confidence. I think if we could pick up two wins in a row now, we'll be on our way."
Randy Brown had 16 points, 11 rebounds and eight asssists for Chicago, which snapped a four-game road losing streak.
"I can never remember being that close to a triple-double," Brown said. "We had a lot of guys help out in different ways tonight. We didn't stop fighting."
Mercer scored 26 points and Kenny Anderson added 19 for the Celtics, who have dropped four straight to the Bulls.
"I give credit to Chicago, they made some good plays down the stretch," Celtics coach Rick Pitino said. "Most of the time we took some really great shots but I think there is a lot of negativity in the air and I think the guys are a little nervous because of it."
Chicago led by nine entering the fourth quarter and still held a 72-64 advantage with 9:17 left in regulation after Barry drilled a 3-pointer. But Anderson fed Vitaly Potapenko for a layup that ignited a 9-0 run.
Anderson completed a three-point play, a layup by Mercer brought the Celtics within a point and Paul Pierce's 23-footer from the left sideline gave Boston a 73-72 advantage with 5:46 left.
The teams traded baskets over the next 82 seconds until Boston used a 5-0 spurt, taking an 80-75 advantage on two free throws by Tony Battie with 3:45 left.
After a layup by Kukoc, Potapenko hit the second of two free throws with 54 seconds left to make it 83-80. But with 37 seconds remaining, Dicky Simpkins was fouled by Potapenko while converting a layup and the ensuing free throw forced overtime.
Kukoc and Barry netted 20 points apiece, Bryant added 18 and Simpkins 13 and 11 rebounds for Chicago, which shot just 37 percent (34-of-91) from the field but held a 35-34 advantage on the boards and turned 17 Boston turnovers into 18 points.
Barros netted 12 points and Battie had 10, a season-high tying 11 rebounds and a season-high seven blocks for the Celtics, who shot 39 percent (34-of-87) but went 19-of-30 from the line.
"We didn't look too prepared tonight for what they threw at us," said Walker.
Bulls guard Ron Harper suffered a dislocated left index finger and a strained right knee during the first quarter and played just two minutes.
"I hurt my hand and knee on the same play," Harper said. "I'm waiting to see how I feel tomorrow and I'll go from there."
