Game Story
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Tim Duncan found a way to lead his team to victory, despite a difficult night in Vancouver.
Duncan scored 24 points, including the first four in overtime, as the San Antonio Spurs remained hot, outlasting the floundering Vancouver Grizzlies, 92-88, for their 10th win in 11 games.
Duncan, who played most of the game with severe swelling around his left eye following a first-quarter collision with Cherokee Parks, was held to three points in the fourth quarter. He also missed a free throw with 4.2 seconds left in regulation that set the stage for Vancouver's tying basket.
Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who led all scorers with 25 points, drove the lane before releasing a running jumper as time expired. The ball bounded off the rim before dropping through to knot the contest at 78-78.
Duncan canned a nine-footer to start the extra period and drove the lane for a thunderous dunk with 3:08 remaining to give the Spurs an 82-78 lead. David Robinson followed with a 15-foot jumper to give San Antonio a six-point cushion with 2:23 to go.
While the Grizzlies concentrated on shutting down Duncan, Sean Elliott scored 11 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter. Mario Elie collected 16 for the Spurs, who had their nine-game winning streak snapped Friday at Portland.
The Spurs have won the last five meetings with the Grizzlies and four straight in Vancouver.
Rookie Mike Bibby scored 18 points and Pete Chilcutt added a season-high 11 for the Grizzlies, who have lost 14 of 15.
With 6:47 left in the first quarter, Duncan collided with Parks while going for a rebound. The two became entangled and Parks landed on top of Duncan, who appeared to strike his head on the floor.
Duncan was down for several minutes as trainers tended to him. He walked off under his own power and spent a couple of minutes on the bench before returning.
