Game Story
OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- One night after a scorching
shooting performance, the San Antonio Spurs had a dismal
offensive effort but were saved by the bench to post their ninth
straight victory, 82-78 over the Golden State Warriors.
Malik Rose scored seven of his 17 points in the fourth quarter
and fellow reserve Steve Kerr added a season-high 14, including
two key free throws in the waning seconds, as the Spurs earned
their sixth consecutive road win.
"I got out there and gave a little intensity, that's my job,"
Rose said. "We have such great starters, our practices are a
bore. They (the starters) got off to a slow start tonight, and
it just helped us (the bench)."
The Spurs connected on a season-best 61 percent from the field
and notched their highest point total of the campaign in
Tuesday's 121-109 triumph at Sacramento. Tonight, they shot
only 30 percent (16-of-53) from the field through three quarters
before hitting 10-of-16 over the final 12 minutes.
Tim Duncan had 17 points and a season-high 17 rebounds for San
Antonio, which is in the midst of its longest winning streak in
three years. He was 5-of-18 from the field and fellow
frontcourt star David Robinson scored only three points on
1-of-8 shooting.
"How many games has he played in this league He's entitled to
one bad game once in a while," Duncan said of Robinson.
Rose shot 6-of-9 from the field and grabbed six rebounds, while
Kerr was 3-of-4 from the floor and made all six of his free
throws. The Spurs' bench shot 12-of-20 and the starters made
only 14-of-49 from the field.
"It was nice to get the contribution (from the bench)," Kerr
said. "We got off to a really rough start. Our starters were
tired, they played a rough game last night."
Bimbo Coles scored 20 points but only two in the final period
for the Warriors, who have dropped three in a row at home after
winning seven straight at Oakland Arena.
A hook shot by Rose gave San Antonio a 65-62 lead with 7:19 to
play, but Donyell Marshall answered with three straight free
throws to tie the game. A pair of foul shots by Duncan put the
Spurs back on top before John Starks buried a 3-pointer to give
Golden State a 68-67 advantage.
Avery Johnson responded with a 16-footer that put San Antonio in
front for good, and then fed Duncan for a jumper that made it
71-68 with 3:16 to go. Jason Caffey hit a hook to cut it to one
and pulled down a rebound off a miss by Duncan, but his errant
pass led to Rose's dunk.
"We just couldn't close it, just couldn't close it," Coles said.
"At the end of the game, the opportunities were there. They
made their shots, we didn't. That's what it's all about."
After misses by Terry Cummings and Marshall, Elliott sank a
17-footer that gave San Antonio a 75-70 edge with 1:40 left. The
Warriors made one final charge, pulling within 78-76 on
Marshall's 28-foot 3-pointer with 20 seconds to go.
Elliott answered with two foul shots and after Coles hit a
driving layup, Kerr sank a pair of free throws with 9.4
remaining to help seal the victory. Marshall missed a pair of
3-pointers in the final moments.
Kerr, who has missed only one of his 21 free throws this season,
buried both of his attempts from beyond the arc while the rest
of the Spurs missed all five of their 3-pointers. They atoned
for poor shooting from the floor by hitting 28-of-36 from the
foul line. Golden State made just 9-of-14 free throws.
Starks scored 14 points, Caffey had 11 and 12 rebounds and Erick
Dampier pulled down 11 boards for the Warriors, who owned an
impressive 58-42 edge on the glass against the 7-footers --
Duncan and Robinson. But Golden State's downfall was its
outside shooting, hitting just 3-of-15 3-pointers and finishing
37 percent (33-of-90) from the field.
The Warriors raced to a 12-2 lead on Coles' 17-footer. San
Antonio trailed 16-4 midway through the period when coach Gregg
Popovich went to the bench, replacing Duncan, Robinson and
Johnson with Rose, Will Pedue and Lloyd Daniels. The reserves
helped get the Spurs back in it, with Daniels feeding Rose for a
dunk with 27 seconds left to make it 24-17.
"Our starters had a bit of a problem starting out the game,"
Popovich said. "Our bench was great tonight because Golden State
played their (butts) off. From minute one to minute 48, they go
after your butt. They deserve a lot of credit for it."
"They came out with a lot of energy. We came out kind of flat,"
Duncan added. "Coach made a great move, bringing in people from
the bench."
A basket by Johnson and three free throws by Kerr cut it to
24-22 early in the second quarter. Kerr hit a jumper and
3-pointer to give the Spurs a 29-26 lead with 6:31 left before
halftime. The game remained close the rest of the way, with
Golden State taking a 56-54 lead into the final period.
"We just played our (butts) off and got beat," Golden State
coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "We've got guys who are sick, guys
who are banged up. You can't play much better than we did."
