Game Story
ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Tim Hardaway scored 24 points, including a pair of key free throws with 1:33 remaining, as the Miami Heat held off the Atlanta Hawks for their sixth straight victory, 86-85.
Hardaway made a pair of free throws to give Miami an 84-74 lead with 3:35 to play before Atlanta staged a late rally.
Steve Smith, who scored 22 points, followed Ed Gray's layup with consecutive 3-pointers to pull the Hawks within 84-82 with 2:50 remaining. After Hardaway sank two more from the foul line with 1:33 to go, Mookie Blaylock nailed a 3-pointer to trim the deficit to one with 53 seconds left.
"We fought hard," said Smith. "It wasn't because of a lack of intensity or effort. We didn't execute well. But we're playing together and playing well now."
Blaylock scored 16 points, but missed a 14-footer at the buzzer as Atlanta had its four-game winning streak snapped.
"We got stung with three 3's in the last couple of minutes," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "It got real hectic, but we made the stop. The guys were just real aggressive on the perimeter. We played very well tonight."
Coming off a screen in the left corner, Blaylock went up for the potential winning shot with two seconds left. Dan Majerle, who finished with 10 points, fought through the pick and managed to get a hand in Blaylock's face just as the shot was released.
"We deserved this win," said Hardaway. "Just get over the pick-and-roll, that was it. Just get over the pick. Dan Majerle played good defense."
"We usually run the pick-and-roll," added Smith. "Mookie got his shot and just missed. We got a shot, that's what we wanted."
Alonzo Mourning caught the ball as it bounded off the front of the rim, securing Miami's seventh victory in 10 road games.
"We knew we had to make a stop defensively," Mourning said. "It was just a matter of making the right defense down the stretch to preserve the win. I think our defense pretty much seemed to win it for us. By us being an experienced ballclub, we knew it was just a matter of making the right plays down the stretch."
Mourning and P.J. Brown each scored 14 points for Miami (18-5), which has the best record in the Eastern Conference and has not lost since an 85-72 setback at Indiana on March 7.
Dikembe Mutombo had 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Hawks, whose last loss had been an 88-78 defeat at Miami a week ago.
Gray collected 12 points off the bench for Atlanta, which shot a season-low 27 percent in the first half and trailed, 44-38, at the break.
Hardaway came out on fire in the second half, sandwiching a pair of 3-pointers around a 15-footer during a 10-2 run as Miami opened a 54-40 bulge with 9:29 left in the third quarter.
"I just felt we needed to come down, run and make some easy buckets," Hardaway added. "I wanted to get my team in an offensive mode."
Atlanta dominated the interior, outrebounding Miami, 46-33. The Hawks held a 22-6 edge on the offensive glass but shot only 35 percent (29-of-82).
Miami shot 45 percent (31-of-69) and committed just eight turnovers.
Blaylock was 4-of-8 from beyond the arc for the Hawks, who converted 7-of-14 shots from long range.
"We never quit," he said. "We got the last shot. It just didn't fall for us. We gave ourselves a chance. It's not frustrating, we gave ourselves a chance. Some go and some don't."
