Game Story
INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- None of Dikembe Mutombo's season-high 20 rebounds were as important as the one he did not grab.
Unable to corral a second straight missed free throw by teammate Mookie Blaylock, Mutombo deflected the ball off Jalen Rose and out of bounds with 11 seconds left to help preserve the Atlanta Hawks' fourth straight victory, 85-79 over the Indiana Pacers.
The Hawks were clinging to an 81-79 lead when Blaylock -- a 66 percent foul shooter -- missed both attempts. Mutombo was able to bat the ball off Rose and Steve Smith and Blaylock each made a pair of free throws in the final seconds to seal the win.
"We did an excellent job boxing out for rebounds," Mutombo said.
"We just didn't play tonight," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "We had too many guys not show up and it cost us. We made too many errors. Rik (Smits) didn't box out on the free throw."
The 7-2 Mutombo scored 10 points, including consecutive dunks, as Atlanta took control midway through the fourth quarter. He had two blocks and forced Pacers center Rik Smits to shoot 10-of-26 from the field.
"Our defensive performance and rebounding, our coach told us to be more aggressive," Mutombo said. "We knew it would be successful if we stayed focused and played together."
"He's a big guy and hard to move around," Pacers forward Antonio Davis said. "He did a great job and does whatever they ask him to do."
Alan Henderson scored 19 points for the Hawks, who overcame a poor game by Smith, their leading scorer, and the absence of injured starting forward LaPhonso Ellis. Smith scored only 10 points on 3-of-15 shooting and Ellis is on the injured list with back spasms.
"We came out aggressive and controlled the rebounds," Henderson said. "It allowed us to get out on the break and set the tempo we like."
Smits scored 22 points for Indiana, which shot under 38 percent (32-of-85) from the field and ended its homestand at 4-2. The Pacers also were unable to come up with a key loose ball with 16 seconds left.
"We could have come out of this with a pretty good homestand but we had two bad defeats," said Bird, whose club lost to Golden State in the homestand opener.
The game featured 17 ties and 14 lead changes before Atlanta took control. Mutombo's first dunk came off a fast break and capped a 7-0 run that gave the Hawks a 76-69 lead with 4:38 to go. Smits made a jumper but Mutombo dunked off a nice feed from Smith.
After another jumper by Smits, Atlanta's Anthony Johnson drove the lane for a thunderous dunk and an 80-73 advantage with 1:44 left before Indiana rallied. Reggie Miller made a 3-pointer and his airball was followed home by Dale Davis with 44 seconds to go.
Indiana's Chris Mullin stole an in-bounds pass but lost it to a double-team. The ball was loose for a couple of seconds before Atlanta's Grant Long fell on it and called timeout with 16 seconds remaining.
Johnson made 1-of-2 free throws and Smith fouled Miller before he could attempt a potential tying 3-pointer. Miller split a pair from the line before Mutombo's big play.
"Mully loses the ball, we bounced a couple off our feet," Bird said. "We can make excuses all night but we just didn't play."
Blaylock scored 11 points and Long added eight for the Hawks, who shot 44 percent (34-of-78) and held a 51-48 rebounding edge. Atlanta made only 16-of-29 free throws, including 3-of-10 by Henderson.
"We are a pretty good rebounding team," Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "We try to limit teams to one rebound."
Miller scored 15 points and Mark Jackson added 11 and seven assists for the Pacers, who were 9-of-13 from the line. Davis grabbed 13 rebounds.
Jackson scored seven points in the first quarter as Indiana opened a 26-20 lead. But the Pacers shot just 25 percent (6-of-24) in the second quarter, when seven points by rookie reserve Roshown McLeod gave the Hawks a 40-39 halftime lead.
"Our second unit did a good job against their second unit," Blaylock said.
Mutombo grabbed eight rebounds in the third quarter and ended the period with a tip-in that gave Atlanta a 63-61 lead.
