Game Story
SEATTLE (Ticker) -- The Vancouver Grizzlies are still winless in Seattle.
Vin Baker's tip-in with half a second remaining proved to be the difference as the SuperSonics extended the Grizzlies' losing streak to 13 games with an 87-85 victory.
With the score tied, 85-85, Detlef Schrempf drove the left baseline and put up a lay-in that rolled off the rim. But Baker squeezed through a pair of defenders and tipped home the winning shot.
"Detlef made a great move to the basket and how the ball came out I don't know," Baker said. "I was just fortunate to be in the right place at the right time. I'm not really creative with my left (hand), but it happened to fall in the right place."
The Grizzlies did not get off a final attempt.
Baker scored a season-high 31 points on 13-of-19 shooting as the Sonics improved to 7-0 all-time against the Grizzlies at home and 12-1 overall. Seattle had won all six previous meetings at home in this series by an average of 19.6 points.
The Sonics were able to win despite watching leading scorer Gary Payton get ejected with 3:49 left in the third quarter after he picked up a second technical foul.
"A sloppy win is better than a well-played loss as far as I'm concerned," Seattle coach Paul Westphal said. "I'm not quite sure how we wound up winning that game. ... They had some great performances and we didn't seem to be able to shoot the ball. We got our point guard kicked out of the game and somehow won."
Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Bryant Reeves also had a season-high 21 points for the Grizzlies, who are mired in their longest losing streak since dropping 13 straight from December 26, 1997-January 16, 1998.
Vancouver still has a long way to go before matching the longest losing streak in club history -- a 23-game slide from February 16-April 2, 1996.
"I thought we had a great effort," Vancouver coach Brian Hill said. "If this proves anything, it proves that if we could do it at the end of a long road trip against a quality oppnent, then we can do it every night."
The Grizzlies looked to be in control after Abdur-Rahim's dunk with 2:34 remaining put them ahead, 83-77.
But Baker made a layup and capped a surge of eight straight points with a dunk that gave the Sonics an 85-83 advantage with 36 seconds left. However, rookie Mike Bibby answered with a jumper to pull Vancouver even with 15 seconds to play.
"I thought we should've come out with the win," Bibby said. "It was the hardest we've played in a while. They got a lucky tip with .5 seconds."
Bibby finished with 15 points on 4-of-12 shooting as the Grizzlies shot just 38 percent (31-of-82) and made a mediocre 22-of-38 from the free throw line. The Sonics shot 43 percent (29-of-68) from the floor.
"I think we got some really good shots that we couldn't knock down," added Hill. "I think the glaring thing was 22-of-38 from the foul line. That's the difference between a 10-point win and losing at the buzzer."
Michael Smith finished with 11 rebounds and Cherokee Parks had 10 for the Grizzlies, who held a 50-46 rebounding edge. Polynice grabbed 15 rebounds to lead Seattle's effort on the boards.
