Game Story
HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Maybe the veteran Houston Rockets knew what
they were talking about when they withheld praise for the
upstart Trail Blazers after a humiliating loss in Portland nine
days ago.
Hakeem Olajuwon scored 21 points to lead five players in double
figures and the Rockets used a big third quarter en route to a
101-93 victory over the Trail Blazers.
Scottie Pippen had 18 points, seven rebounds, nine assists and
three steals for the Rockets (14-9), who have won six of their
last eight games. The victory was just Houston's second in 12
attempts against a team with a winning record.
"I was pretty happy tonight," said Pippen. "That's my style of
play, to get involved early and let the team feed off of my
energy from the offensive and defensive standpoints."
Houston held a 54-51 advantage at the half but exploded with an
18-4 run to start the third quarter. The Rockets outscored
Portland 26-12 in the period, opening an 80-63 bulge entering
the fourth quarter.
"We've been up in the third quarter before this year and things
have changed," said Olajuwon. "But we were never comfortable.
I like the way we won the game. It was a total team effort.
Everyone was focused on one goal, winning, that was the
difference."
In the last meeting between these teams on March 7, the Blazers
jumped on the star-studded Rockets early and never relented,
racing to a 111-71 victory. It was Portland's biggest win in
130 all-time meetings against Houston.
"It's a big win for us," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "I
think this does something for those guys in the locker room. I
wasn't bent out of shape about (the loss) up there because it
was a crazy deal when the dam broke."
After the loss, Olajuwon and Charles Barkley refused to dub the
Blazers the best team in the Western Conference, insisting it
was too early in the season to judge whether Portland had the
poise necessary to contend for the conference crown.
Barkley collected 15 points and nine boards, including the
12,000th rebound of his career to become the 15th player in NBA
history to reach the plateau.
"God has blessed me with great talents and it's an honor to
accomplish it," Barkley said. "I have played with a lot of
great coaches and players that helped me get there."
Damon Stoudamire scored 17 points and Walt Williams added 15 for
Portland (17-5), which had won 10 of its last 11 games. The
Blazers also had their six-game road winning streak snapped.
"The third quarter they came out and played well and took the
game from us," said Stoudamire. "I don't think they made any
adjustments at halftime, we just didn't play well that period.
That's when the game was won and lost and you've got to give the
Rockets credit."
Brent Price nailed a running jumper in the lane as time expired
in the first half to cap a 9-2 run and give Houston a 54-51 lead
at the break.
Olajuwon brought the home crowd to its feet during Houston's
third-quarter run. He stole an errant pass at center court and
dribbled past Arvydas Sabonis before throwing down a thunderous
tomahawk slam to extend Houston's lead to 69-55 with 7:09
remaining.
"They didn't do anything we didn't expect," Portland coach Mike
Dunleavy said. "They're a talented team and a veteran team.
They got us in foul trouble and that took it's toll on us in the
first half and at the start of the second half."
Olajuwon added a layup to cap the Rockets' spurt, making it
72-58 with 6:11 left. Pippen, who mustered just four points in
the last meeting with Portland, scored five during the game's
decisive 18-4 run.
Sam Mack, who was acquired from Vancouver prior to Thursday's
trade deadline, scored 17 points off the bench and reserve
forward Othella Harrington added 10 for the Rockets, who shot 42
percent (32-of-76).
"This is 110 percent better (than Vancouver)," said Mack. "I
couldn't be in a better situation right now. To come from a
losing team to a winning team and being able to contribute right
away."
Portland shot 37 percent, including a woeful 2-of-17 performance
in the third quarter.
Rasheed Wallace and Brian Grant each scored 13 points for
Portland, which held a 49-39 advantage on the boards but allowed
24 points off 18 turnovers.
The Blazers made a run in the fourth quarter, closing within
95-90 with 1:18 left on Wallace's six-foot jumper. But Price
responded with a driving layup with 45 ticks remaining to seal
the victory.
