Game Story
OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- The Sacramento Kings got a lift
from a rookie and it was not Jason Williams.
Rookie Predrag Stojakovic scored six points in a fourth-quarter
surge as the Kings capitalized on a 19-4 run in the final period
and posted a 111-105 victory over Golden State Warriors.
Sacramento trailed 92-87 with 9:50 remaining after Tony Delk
converted 1-of-2 free throws for the Warriors. But Stojakovic
answered with a pair of foul shots and Lawrence Funderbruke had
a free throw and hook shot to draw Sacramento even with 5:52
left.
The teams traded baskets before Stojakovic hit a layup to give
the Kings the lead for good, 96-94, with 4 1/2 minutes to play.
Stojakovic finished with 12 points as did Williams, who many are
calling one of the league's best young point guards.
Ex-Warrior Chris Webber scored 20 points and Tariq Abdul-Wahad
added 18 for the Kings, who have won consecutive games following
a three-game losing streak. Sacramento also garnered its sixth
road win, matching its total from last season.
Webber talked about returning to face his former team.
"There's still people in the organization that I miss," he said.
"I tried to have fun with it because if you think about it, what
happens, you get depressed. I thought I was going to retire
here but I also thought I would retire in Washington."
Bimbo Coles tallied a season-high 23 points on 11-of-13 shooting
and Chris Mills contributed 21 for Golden State, which has
dropped its last two games at home after winning seven straight
on its home floor.
After Stojakovic's layup gave the Kings the lead, Webber hit a
hook shot to push the lead to four before Mills made a driving
layup to bring the Warriors within 98-96 with 2 1/2 minutes
remaining.
But Stojakovic hit two more free throws, Abdul-Wahad had
consecutive baskets and Williams hit a pair of foul shots to
push the lead to 106-96 with 63 seconds to play.
Sacramento made just 24-of-40 free throws but Golden State went
to the line only seven times, making five. The seven free
throws tied the Toronto Raptors for lowest total in the league
this season.
The Kings led by as many as 11 points in the first half at 55-44
after Funderburke's hook shot with 4:34 left in the second
quarter. Funderburke scored 11 points off the bench on 5-of-7
shooting.
Abdul-Wahad had 12 points and Vlade Divac scored 11 of his 16 in
a high-scoring first half, after which the Kings held a 65-58
advantage.
"I was surprised when they came out and ran with us," said
Sacramento coach Rick Adelman. "I guess it was because we
played last night. But we're pretty good in the open court."
"They pretty much lulled us into that (running)," Coles said.
"We didn't want to get into that type of game. We can't play
that way. We definitely want to run when the opportunity is
there, but we don't want to get into a crazy game when it's up
and down."
Corliss Williamson's hook shot gave the Kings an 80-72 lead with
5:22 left in the third quarter. Williamson made 8-of-13 shots
and finished with 16 points.
But sparked by six points from Jason Caffey and four from Terry
Cummings, the Warriors closed the quarter on a 15-2 spurt to
take an 87-82 lead entering the final period.
Each team shot the ball well. Sacramento hit 52 percent
(41-of-78) from the field while the Warriors finished at 51
percent (47-of-93).
Donyell Marshall grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Warriors, who
held a 46-40 edge on the boards.
Golden State was playing shorthanded, with rookie Antawn Jamison
out due to a sprained left ankle and Muggsy Bogues sitting with
a right knee contusion.
