Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Alan Henderson scored a season-high 24 points and Dikembe Mutombo added 16 and 13 rebounds as the Atlanta Hawks had their way inside and resumed their dominance of the Toronto Raptors with an 86-75 victory.
The 6-9 Henderson and the 7-2 Mutombo took advantage of the absence of Raptors center Kevin Willis. The former Hawk suffered a sprained left shoulder early in the first quarter and did not return.
Steve Smith scored 17 points for the Hawks, who had won their first 12 meetings with the Raptors until an 86-77 home loss on March 4. Atlanta has won three of four since a three-game losing streak.
"I think that we were determined to play better," Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "If we were looking for revenge, we have 29 teams in the league, so we'd be doing that all year. But we wanted to play well and not make the same mistakes."
"We were trying to make sure that today was like a payback," Mutombo said. "We had to come out and be aggressive and play our best ballgame and don't let them get their rhythm."
The Hawks also played the entire second half without forward LaPhonso Ellis, who experienced back spasms while sitting on the bench in the second quarter. Ellis was placed on the injured list after the game.
However, Atlanta did not miss Ellis nearly as much as Toronto missed Willis, who averages 14 points and just under 10 rebounds per game and will be out a week.
"You lose a starting center like Kevin Willis, one of the top five rebounders in the 1990s, and our leading rebounder, and you take 10 or 15 points away from us," Raptors coach Butch Carter said.
"We were going to beat them anyway. They weren't going to come in here and beat us twice," Henderson said. "He's a factor, especially on the boards. But we're going to take care of our business regardless of who they had on the court."
Reserve center Michael Stewart had five fouls in 10 minutes trying to defend Mutombo, who is averaging 17 points and 14 rebounds over the last two games after being limited to four points in a loss to Miami.
The frustration of dealing with the bigger Mutombo finally got to the Raptors as forward John Wallace was ejected for a flagrant foul with 25 seconds to go. Wallace lost a battle for a rebound and shoved Mutombo, who shoved back.
"They're pesky," Wilkens said. "They play physical and they're pushing and shoving. They're trying to get you out of your game mentally and we can't allow that."
Atlanta improved to 10-0 when leading at halftime and 3-4 at its smaller home of Alexander Coliseum.
Doug Christie scored 21 points and rookie Vince Carter added 14 and nine rebounds for Toronto, which shot just 38 percent (29-of-76) from the field and fell to 2-8 on the road.
"They came to play. We didn't come to play," Vince Carter said. "We just didn't get it going. The shots that we did have, we didn't make. We were trying to still be physical and do the things we did last time, but it didn't work."
Atlanta found itself in an early 12-3 hole before Smith scored five points and Henderson scored four in an 11-1 run, giving the Hawks their first lead.
Henderson made 10-of-17 shots, including a jumper in the first minute of the second period that gave Atlanta the lead for good at 24-23.
The Raptors cut a five-point halftime deficit to 47-44 on a dunk by Carter with 10:46 left in the third quarter. But Atlanta's size took over in an 8-2 run. Henderson had a layup and Mutombo dunked before Carter hit a short jumper. Henderson answered with two short jumpers to build the lead to 55-46 with 7:59 to play.
In the final 20 minutes, Toronto got no closer than six points. Atlanta opened its largest lead at 71-58 on a 3-pointer by Smith with 9:46 to play.
Anthony Johnson scored 12 points off the bench for the Hawks, who shot 40 percent (26-of-65) from the field but made 31-of-45 free throws.
Alvin Williams scored 11 points and John Thomas 10 for Toronto, which shot 38 percent (29-of-76) but made just 16-of-26 from the line. Forward Charles Oakley, who averages nearly nine points and eight rebounds, managed just two and five.
