Game Story
LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Brian Grant scored a season-high 25 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the Portland Trail Blazers rallied from a 17-point deficit to defeat the Los Angeles Clippers for the ninth straight time, 106-96 in overtime.
Portland went on an 11-3 run during the extra session with Grant scoring six points, including four free throws. Grant was 6-for-6 from the foul line in overtime and 13-of-13 for the game, helping the Trail Blazers improve to 16-2 in their last 18 games against Los Angeles.
"I was just fortunate tonight," Grant said. "I'll probably never shoot free throws that well again. It was nice because of what it meant for the team. Somebody had to do something."
Los Angeles had no timeouts and trailed 91-89 with 1.5 seconds left in the fourth quarter before Lorenzen Wright caught Maurice Taylor's court-length pass and drew a foul from Greg Anthony with four tenths of a second left.
After a foul-line conversation between Wright and Portland guard Damon Stoudamire, Wright calmly hit both free throws to send the contest into overtime. Wright scored just 10 points but made all six of his foul shots and grabbed 18 rebounds.
Los Angeles seemingly had lost the contest late in regulation, trailing 90-87 when Darrick Martin missed a 3-pointer. Eric Piatkowski put home the rebound with 2.2 seconds left instead of kicking the ball outside for another game-tying attempt.
Stoudamire made 1-of-2 foul shots with 1.5 seconds left to make it 91-89 and set up the final moments.
Jim Jackson added 21 points as the Blazers won for the ninth time in 10 games and earned their fifth straight road win. It was the first of a four-game road swing for Portland.
"It shows this team doesn't have to rely on one guy," Jackson said. "We were just trying to wear them down with defense, and that eventually got us back into the game."
Portland was 39-of-50 from the line while Los Angeles made only 12 trips to the stripe, converting them all.
Two days after ending its season-opening 17-game losing streak, Los Angeles could not make it two wins in a row despite 18 points from Lamond Murray off the bench. Taylor added 14 for the Clippers, who were playing their third game in four nights.
"Unfortunately, we struggled with our shot selection and with them going to the foul line that often," Clippers coach Chris Ford said. "We were down to not getting good looks. That's a bad combination."
The Clippers went on a 10-3 run over five minutes of the first quarter. Martin scored four points in that run and finished the period with eight as Los Angeles built a 27-18 lead.
The advantage was extended to 35-20 two minutes into the second quarter thanks to an 8-0 run, aided by 3-pointers from Piatkowski and Rodney Rogers. Portland answered with eight straight points of its own, pulling within 39-36 with 6:38 remaining.
Grant scored 13 points in the first half, but Martin netted 10 to help the Clippers take a 51-48 lead at intermission.
A 14-3 burst in the third quarter gave the Clippers a 65-51 lead with 5:56 left. Murray and Wright each scored six points in that spurt, which helped Los Angeles take a 76-64 lead after three quarters.
