Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Gary Trent had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead three double-doubles by the starting frontcourt as the Dallas Mavericks snapped a four-game losing streak by pushing around the slumping Orlando Magic, 93-76.
Fellow forward A.C. Green had 13 points and 10 rebounds and center Shawn Bradley added 10 and 10 with three blocks for the Mavericks, who held a 49-37 rebounding advantage and improved to 5-4 at home.
"It was a team effort," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "It started on the defensive end and the rebounding end. The game plan was solid and they followed it and made some shots. We just played like a real team tonight.
"I was very proud of our guys. They just beat the best team in the East and they beat them handily. I think that shows the way we can play."
Orlando was held to 32 second-half points in its third straight loss. The Magic's starting front line of Horace Grant, Bo Outlaw and center Isaac Austin combined for just 16 points and 12 rebounds.
"They got us down there and they were able to establish position down low," Magic reserve forward Derek Strong said. "He's 7-6 (Bradley) and a big presence. We have to be aware of him down there. In the past, he has been mainly a defensive player and has been able to alter shots. Now his offensive game is coming around and he is a threat on both ends."
Michael Finley scored 10 of his 18 points in the pivotal third quarter, when Dallas shot 50 percent (10-of-20) from the field and held Orlando to 35 percent (6-of-17).
"The Mavericks did a great job of getting the ball inside," Magic guard Penny Hardaway said. "They came out with a lot of intensity and had a big offensive day. I'm sure they were fired up with us coming in here."
Nursing a 55-52 lead, the Mavericks used an 8-2 run to extend to 63-54 with 3:06 remaining. Trent had a jumper and dunk around a driving layup by Bradley to key the burst.
The Magic cut the deficit to 68-61 as Hardaway opened the fourth quarter with a jumper. Robert Pack had a jumper and two free throws around a 19-footer by Hubert Davis as the Mavs quickly rebuilt the lead to 74-61.
A hook by Bradley and a dunk by Finley completed a 12-4 run to open the period and made it 80-63 with 7:56 to play, Dallas opened its largest lead at 93-73 on a three-point play by Steve Nash with 2:24 remaining.
"Tonight they had trouble with our pick-and-roll," Nash said. "I think this team whould be judged by our commitment to defense. I think that was what was important tonight. ... That is going to be the key for this team's success."
Orlando could get nothing going in the final period, shooting 33 percent (6-of-18).
Nash had nine points and 11 assists for the Mavs, who shot 47 percent (37-of-79) from the field.
Nick Anderson scored 18 points and Strong added 13 for the Magic, who shot 39 percent (31-of-80).
"We were very flat and we couldn't get anything done offensively," Magic coach Chuck Daly said. "When you aren't able to do that, you will struggle, but I have to say Don Nelson has done one heck of a job with the team getting them to respond and getting them back together. They played great tonight."
