Game Story
PHOENIX (Ticker) -- The Phoenix Suns may be sending Jason Kidd
and Tom Gugliotta to the 1999 U.S. National Team, but it was
Cleveland Cavaliers forward Shawn Kemp who displayed the skills
of a Dream Teamer.
Kemp scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Cavaliers
snapped a three-game road losing streak with an 86-73 victory
over the Suns.
"It's been a while since we won a game on the road," Cleveland
coach Mike Fratello said. "It's good to come back, especially
after a tough game (in Utah) last night. It really took a team
effort to win. We played all 10 guys in the first half and they
all came in and contributed different aspects."
Kemp, a member of Dream Team II that won the 1994 World
Championships in Toronto, was 8-of-12 from the field. He sank an
11-foot jumper to cap a 12-1 run that gave the Cavaliers a 43-35
lead with 51 seconds left in the first half.
"I did not want to have two bad games in a row," said Kemp, who
was just 3-of-11 from the field at Utah on Tuesday. "I really
challenged myself to come out here and play better -- especially
early. I wanted to get the rest of the team going."
"Shawn Kemp is a monster on the inside," Phoenix coach Danny
Ainge said. "He put a lot of pressure on us.
Cedric Henderson scored all 14 of his points in the second half
and grabbed 10 rebounds for Cleveland, which has won six of the
last seven and 10 of 14 meetings with Phoenix.
"I got a little more playing time in the second half," Henderson
said. "That's the way the game flows sometimes. The first half
I wasn't getting the breaks. The second half, we had a lot of
breaks and then we started running down the floor. They never
run plays for me, but everybody had a great effort and we all
shared in the scoring."
Gugliotta scored 16 points on 7-of-17 shooting. Kidd added 11
and seven assists for the Suns, who fell to 4-6 at home this
season.
"You're not going to make every shot, that stuff happens," said
Gugliotta. "If that was our worst problem, we'd be all right.
But we got some breakdowns that we go through at crucial times.
We're kind of broken up a little bit and just not doing a good
job."
Earlier today, Gugliotta and Kidd both were selected for the
1999 U.S. national team that will attempt to qualify for the
2000 Olympics.
"We didn't shoot the ball extremely well tonight," said Kidd.
"Cleveland played a good game. They knocked down the open shots
and we didn't. That's the name of the game."
Brevin Knight had 14 points and nine assists and Wesley Person
added 12 points for Cleveland, which had lost six of its last
eight. It had not won on the road since an 87-77 victory at
Charlotte on February 10.
"Defense leads to offense, we realized that," Knight said.
"Tonight we did a good job. Tonight it was just all there. All
aspects of the game were there, especially defense and
rebounding, which got us running."
Danny Manning collected 15 points and Chris Morris added 12 off
the bench for the Suns, who were without guard Rex Chapman due
to a right calf bruise. Chapman, who is averaging 12.7 points
per game, is listed as day-to-day.
The Cavaliers shot 46 percent (34-of-74) from the field and held
a 42-39 edge on the boards.
Vitaly Potapenko had nine points and six rebounds and held Suns
center Luc Longley to just two points on 0-of-5 shooting in 25
minutes.
The Suns are 8-0 in games where they score 100 or more points
but just 2-9 when they fail to reach the plateau. The points
were a season low for the Suns, who suffered an 82-74 setback to
Utah on February 11.
Phoenix held a 34-31 lead with 7:06 remaining after Gugliotta
sank a pair of free throws. Derek Anderson sparked the Cavs'
decisive run with a 3-pointer to knot the contest.
After Cliff Robinson made a free throw to put the Suns back in
front, Potapenko sank three from the stripe to give Cleveland
the lead for good, 37-35, with 4:35 left.
Anderson hit two free throws, Potapenko drilled an 11-footer and
Kemp capped the decisive spurt with a jumper with less than a
minute to go in the half.
"We had some breakdowns defensively that there are no excuses
for," Ainge said. "I don't know if our team is suffering from a
lack of confidence right now. We are just not focused. That is
my job to make sure guys are concentrating and if they are not,
I have to put the guys out there that will. It's very
discouraging."
