Game Story
PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- It took the Portland Trail Blazers
a half before they showed why they have the NBA's best record.
Isaiah Rider scored 13 of his 21 points in the second half as
the Trail Blazers capitalized on a key third-quarter run and
defeated the Sacramento Kings, 103-98, for their eighth straight
win.
Playing for the third time in as many nights, Portland trailed
55-47 at intermission before outscoring Sacramento 31-15 in the
third. Rider scored 10 points in the period as the Blazers
remained the league's only unbeaten team at home (9-0).
"Obviously, they came out fast and hard," Portland coach Mike
Dunleavy said. "They have a lot of firepower. They jumped on
us, but it was really pleasing the way we came back. We just
did a really good job in the third quarter. Our defense
tightened up and we really played with a lot of effort and sharp
execution."
Brian Grant added 19 points and 11 rebounds and Arvydas Sabonis
also scored 19 points for the Blazers, who have won 13 of their
last 14 games. Portland also defeated the Kings for the fifth
straight time at home and second time in the last six days.
"I really don't know how many games we've won in a row," Grant
said. "Playing so many games, there's no time to really think
about it."
Vlade Divac scored 16 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead
Sacramento, which failed in a bid to go over .500 for the first
time since they were 5-4 on February 21.
Trailing 55-47 at the half, the Blazers started the third with a
15-2 surge, capped by Grant's short jumper with 7:24 left in the
period to take a 62-59 lead. Sabonis had five points while
Grant and Rider added four points apiece in the burst.
With the Blazers leading 65-63, Grant hit an eight-footer and
Rider made a layup, triggering an 11-2 run that pushed the lead
to 76-65 with 2:22 left in the quarter. Damon Stoudamire, who
finished with 14 points and seven assists, drained a pair of
3-pointers in the run.
"We were down nine points at halftime," Rider said. "We didn't
give up and we didn't get caught up in the rapture. We just got
back in the game. It was a rough night, but just another night
at the office. I think we're doing a great job this year of
finding ways to win when we're not going so good."
Portland took its biggest lead of the contest at 97-81 with 6:19
remaining in the fourth quarter. But the Kings refused to die,
using a 14-2 burst, capped by Tariq Abdul-Wahad's layup with 90
seconds to play, to pull within 99-95. However, Sacramento could
get no closer.
"In the third quarter, we showed our inexperience," Kings coach
Rick Adelman said. "We got impatient. We played 30 minutes of
good basketball tonight and a bad 18. But we've battled back
all year, so it wasn't surprising that we made a run at the end
of the game."
Lawrence Funderburke scored 18 points to lead Sacramento's
reserves, who outscored the Blazers' bench, 39-17. Chris Webber
also had another strong game for the Kings, nothing his 18th
double-double in 19 games with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
