Game Story
AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Grant Hill scored 19 points and Loy Vaught added a season-high 18 as the surging Detroit Pistons used a pivotal 10-2 fourth-quarter run to defeat the Washington Wizards, 75-71.
Hill hit a 16-footer with 2:48 to play, sparking the run and pulling the Pistons within 69-67. Vaught followed with a layup 23 seconds later and Lindsey Hunter made a pair of free throws to put Detroit ahead for good, 71-69, with 2:09 remaining.
"It was a tough game. Both teams seemed like they were swimming upstream," Hill said. "We didn't play well, but we made some plays down the stretch and got some stops. There were two fatigued teams out there, but we had a little more energy at the end."
Eric Montross knocked down a 13-footer from the left corner for his only basket, giving Detroit a four-point cushion. Calbert Cheaney's pulled the Wizards within 73-71 with 1:05 to play, but Bison Dele grabbed a rebound after a missed jumper by teammate Joe Dumars, was fouled and made both free throws with 14.4 seconds left for the final margin.
Hunter finished with 16 points and Dele grabbed nine rebounds for Detroit, which has won seven of its last eight games after losing six of seven. Hill and Vaught each grabbed eight rebounds for the Pistons, who shot 43.5 percent (27-for-62) from the field.
"It was a game where we just kind of gutted it out," said Detroit coach Alvin Gentry. "Obviously, we didn't shoot the ball very well and they didn't either. But it's a win and we're not going to complain about wins."
Mitch Richmond scored 22 points and Juwan Howard added 14 for Washington, which has lost nine of the last 11 meetings with the Pistons. The Wizards shot only 39.5 percent (30-for-76).
"We had control of the basketball game, but then we had some unforced errors down the stretch where we didn't even get a shot off," said Washington coach Bernie Bickerstaff. "We got in a hurry and lost our composure offensively. But I can't find fault with the team. They fought hard and played well. We shot 39 percent. It's kind of difficult to score when you shoot 39 percent."
Jeff McInnis started in place of the injured Rod Strickland and had a career-high eight assists for the Wizards. Strickland has a strained groin.
Otis Thorpe, who had nine points and a season-high 17 rebounds, made a tip-in to cap a 10-0 run and give the Wizards their biggest lead of the game, 20-11, with 1:50 left in the first quarter. The Pistons answered with six straight points, cutting the deficit to 20-17 with 39.7 seconds left in the first.
Washington used an 8-0 burst and pushed the lead to 31-23 when Howard made an eight-footer midway through the second quarter. Richmond scored 11 points in the first half, helping the Wizards to a 40-36 lead at the break.
McInnis opened the third period with a 17-footer and Howard followed with a 15-footer to stretch Washington's lead to 44-36. The Pistons cut the gap to 46-45 on a 3-pointer by Dumars with 8:57 left and took its first lead of the quarter when Hunter hit a jumper from the right corner with 5:10 left. The Wizards were able to take a lead into the final period after Stackhouse made a free throw with one second left for a 60-59 edge.
The fourth quarter featured four ties before Hunter's free throws.
