Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Steve Smith scored 24 points, including the go-ahead layup with 1:16 to play, as the Atlanta Hawks held off hot-shooting Nick Anderson and handed the Orlando Magic their first home loss of the season, 114-110.
The Hawks, who dropped the first two meetings with the Magic this season, blew a 10-point fourth-quarter lead before Smith rebounded a missed jumper by Alan Henderson and made a layup to give Atlanta a 105-104 lead.
"Going down the stretch, I felt that we were making good decisions," said Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens. "(The Magic) are a good team. We needed a good win against a good team, so that we can get ourselves going again."
Penny Hardaway missed a 3-pointer on Orlando's ensuing trip before Mookie Blaylock drained a 25-footer from beyond the arc to stretch the lead to 108-104 with 38.1 seconds remaining.
"Last week (in Orlando), I (missed) a shot to win the ballgame and put the game away," said Blaylock. "That is part of the game. As a team, we played good. We relaxed as a team."
The Hawks benefited from a three-day layoff as they appeared to be the fresher team down the stretch. Atlanta snapped a three-game losing streak and climbed back over the .500 mark at 9-8.
The Magic had a four-game winning streak snapped and suffered their first defeat in 11 games at the Orlando Arena this season. The loss left Portland (8-0) as the only NBA team with a perfect home record.
"First of all, give them credit," said Orlando coach Chuck Daly. "They played a great basketball game. They were one step ahead of us a good portion of the first half. We kept battling back. We got the upper hand, but couldn't hold them off."
Anderson scored 18 of his season-high 34 points in the fourth quarter and would not let the Hawks pull away. He sank consecutive 3-pointers, the second of which pulled the Magic within 111-110 with 15.2 seconds to play.
"They were determined not to let us beat them three times," said Anderson. "They fought and fought and fought to the end. We gave ourselves chances, numerous opportunities to win the ballgame. As they say, the ball didn't bounce our way."
Blaylock missed a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left but grabbed the offensive rebound. After Smith sank a pair from the line with nine seconds remaining, Blaylock stole a pass by Horace Grant and hit a free throw to seal the victory.
"We made a crucial mistake on a box-out on a free throw," added Daly. "We were down one and we didn't come up with the ball with the inside position. It was a long rebound and Mookie tracked it down and then we had to foul which put them in a position to win."
Orlando forward-center Bo Outlaw sat out with a left calf contusion, ending his streak of 199 consecutive games played and hampering the Magic's ability to contend on the boards.
Dikembe Mutombo grabbed 17 rebounds to go with 18 points for the Hawks, who held a commanding 50-34 advantage on the glass.
"They outrebounded us by 16 rebounds," Daly said. "Because they rebounded so well, they went to the free throw line 32 times to our 18. When you get second shots, which they were able to do and take it back up, we were getting a lot of fouls."
Henderson had 19 points and 12 rebounds and Blaylock added 15 points for the Hawks, who shot 45 percent (43-of-96) and converted 18 turnovers into 21 points.
"It's a good win for us," said Henderson. "If you look back at the two games we lost to them, we should have won both of them."
Hardaway scored 16 points and Dominique Wilkins added 15 in his first start of the season for Orlando, which shot a sparklng 52 precent (44-of-84) from the floor. Anderson was 11-of-17, including 5-of-8 from three-point range.
"Bo gives us a lot of energy, he's a big part of our team," said Wilkins, who was 7-of-10 from the floor against his old team. "I just tried to come and do what I know how to do. I think everyone knows what I can do."
Atlanta entered the fourth quarter with an 89-81 lead but Orlando pulled even at 96-96 midway though the period on a jumper by Hardaway.
Anderson scored seven straight points for Orlando, knotting the contest at 103-103 on a pair of free throws with 2:13 left.
Isaac Austin, who had 11 points, made 1-of-2 from the line with 1:34 to play, putting Orlando ahead by one before Smith gave Atlanta the lead for good with his follow of Henderson's miss.
Grant had a woeful night for the Magic, with three points and four rebounds in 40 minutes.
"It's very difficult to beat a team three times in a row," said Grant. "They came back with all the guys, Steve Smith and Alan Henderson, who had a great game. We just made some mental errors and they took advantage of it."
