Game Story
MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Luckily for the Milwaukee Bucks, they were
playing the new-look Chicago Bulls.
Ray Allen led four players in double figures with 17 points as
Milwaukee used a 19-3 fourth-quarter run to bury Chicago, 81-76,
for their season-high fourth straight win.
The Bucks trailed by as many as 15 points in the second quarter
and were still behind by nine with 7:13 left. But the Bulls
made only 3-of-18 shots in the final period before losing their
second straight in the series after a 12-game winning streak.
"They beat us every game last year," said Bucks guard Michael
Curry, who had 10 points off the bench. "So we did what we had
to do to win tonight."
The Bucks trailed, 71-62, but Allen scored eight points during
the decisive spurt. Curry gave Milwaukee its first lead of the
game, 75-74, making a basket with 3:04 to play.
Brent Barry had 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists for
the Bulls, who lost their third straight and fell to 4-13. They
are one-half game ahead of New Jersey for the worst record in
the Eastern Conference.
Last season, they did not suffer their 13th loss until the 43rd
game on their way to a sixth championship in eight years.
Toni Kukoc had 17 points and nine rebounds and Randy Brown added
18 and eight assists for Chicago, which shot 39 percent
(28-of-71) and got only six points off the bench.
The Bulls led 47-37 at halftime and seemed to hold off a pair of
Bucks' rallies, snapping a 50-50 tie on their way to a 15-4 run
to close the third quarter.
"For three quarters, we played as well as we've played all
year," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "The Bucks picked up
pressure and intensity in the fourth."
Milwaukee then scored the first six points of the fourth, but
Chicago answered with a 6-2 spurt to build its 71-62 advantage.
Kukoc's dunk with 7:15 left was one of only three Bulls' field
goals in the quarter.
"We didn't like the shots in the fourth quarter," Floyd said.
"We came out in the fourth quarter and fell flat and didn't have
good possessions," Barry said. "We forced things in the fourth,
and that was our downfall."
Allen started a 9-0 run with a layup and sank a seven-foot
jumper around a 3-pointer and basket by Michael Curry, which
tied the game, 71-71, with 4:44 to play.
Ron Harper drilled a 3-pointer to give Chicago the lead again,
but Allen started and finished a 10-0 spurt with another layup
and a pair of free throws, putting the Bucks ahead, 81-74, with
11 seconds left.
Allen was 6-for-13 from the floor and 4-of-4 at the line and
fellow star Glenn Robinson finished with 10 points on 2-of-12
shooting for Milwaukee, which hit only 35 percent (27-of-76) of
its shots.
The Bucks recorded 13 steals and six blocked shots.
"We missed a lot of shots, so our defense had to step it up,"
Allen said. "It was a wake-up call for me. But when you're
fighting for the game, you have to stand up for yourself and be
more assertive."
Terrell Brandon had 14 points and eight assists for Milwaukee,
which trailed 24-15 after the first quarter but held the Bulls
to 29 points in the second half.
"It was ugly," Bucks coach George Karl said. "We came out flat.
... It's a "W" and that's all we had to get tonight."
