Game Story
SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Dennis Rodman may not have affected
Karl Malone but he certainly has affected the balance of power
in the Western Conference.
Led by stars Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal and reserves Elden
Campbell and Derek Fisher, the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the
Utah Jazz, 97-89, for their best win of the season.
Rodman was not a factor with only four rebounds in 25 minutes as
he was unable to slow down Malone. But his presence has had a
positive effect on the Lakers, who have won seven consecutive
games. The last six have come since the arrival of Rodman and
new coach Kurt Rambis.
"You have to love the mentality that we're developing on this
ballclub," Rambis said. "Attack, aggressive, a defensive-minded
team. Even on offense, we want to get the ball inside, we want
to attack the glass on drives. That's the type of team we're
trying to establish here."
Malone scored 34 points, most of them against the smaller
Rodman. But he had some trouble when defended by Campbell, a
forgotten man on the bench who scored 10 of his 16 points in the
third quarter.
"The two guys who hurt us today were Fisher and Campbell," said
Jazz assistant Phil Johnson, who fell to 1-1 as he fills in for
Jerry Sloan, still recovering from knee surgery.
The Lakers beat the Jazz for the first time since November 18,
1997, ending a seven-game skid that included a sweep in last
year's Western Conference finals.
"We think Utah is still the best team in the West and we know if
we want to go to the big dance we have to go through these guys
and it's not going to be easy," O'Neal said.
"While we've had a few wins against them, you can't come out and
not have a great game and expect to beat them," said Jazz guard
John Stockton, who scored 16 points.
Los Angeles also handed the Jazz their first regular-season home
loss since February 24, 1998, a span of 19 games. Utah did lose
three home playoff games last year.
"We shouldn't be flat," Johnson said. "We are playing a very
good team that is on a roll and they did a good job of putting
us in a half-court game. We're pretty good at that, but we
don't like to do it all the time."
Bryant scored 24 points and O'Neal had 23 and 16 rebounds. Both
had baskets in an 8-1 spurt midway through the final period that
gave the Lakers control. Fisher added a season-high 20 points.
"We've talked a lot about becoming more of a team for the past
couple of weeks and tonight was a good example of us being a
team," Fisher said.
The Jazz trailed by as much as 14 points in the second quarter
but cut the deficit to 81-80 on a layup by Shandon Anderson with
7:15 remaining. Unlike a home loss to Utah earlier this season,
Los Angeles pulled together and responded with the pivotal run.
O'Neal had a layup and Fisher made a free throw before Malone
made 1-of-2 from the line. Bryant dunked and Derek Harper sank
a 3-pointer, giving the Lakers an 89-81 lead with 4:01 to go.
"They played a great game but we feel we played pretty good
defense, especially down the stretch," O'Neal said. "We also
hit a lot of big shots. Everybody stepped up and played well."
One of those stepping up was Campbell, who has been mentioned in
trade rumors since the lockout ended. He harassed Malone into
missing a handful of jumpers down the stretch as Utah was unable
to rally. Malone made 10-of-22 shots and 14-of-19 free throws.
"Toward the end of the game, Utah usually dictates the pace,"
Campbell said. "I think we did a pretty good job and kept our
wits and played how we want to play and not let them dictate the
game. If you let them dictate the pace, you're going to lose
every time."
Bryant scored six points in an 8-2 run that opened the third
quarter and widened Los Angeles' lead to 53-46. Campbell scored
10 points in the final six minutes of the period, which ended
with the Lakers holding a 68-62 lead.
Los Angeles shot 49 percent (31-of-63) from the field and made
31-of-49 free throws. Bryant was 10-of-13 and O'Neal 3-of-13
from the line.
Jeff Hornacek scored 14 points for the Jazz, who shot 42 percent
(30-of-72) and missed all eight of their 3-pointers. Utah was
29-of-42 from the stripe.
O'Neal scored 14 points in the first quarter as Los Angeles
raced to a 26-20 lead. A 3-pointer by Fisher extended the
advantage to 39-25 with 9:16 left in the second period before
Malone and Stockton scored eight points apiece in an 18-4 run
that tied it at 43-43 less than a minute before halftime.
