GAME RECAP
Alonzo Mourning and Voshon Lenard scored 20 points apiece as the surging Miami Heat held off the Utah Jazz, 104-102, for just their second win ever in Salt Lake City.
Tim Hardaway added 18 points for the Heat, who won their season-high seventh straight game and eighth straight on the road. Miami has taken control of the Atlantic Division, opening a six-game cushion over New York and New Jersey.
Miami had lost its last seven meetings with the Jazz. The Heat had not won in this series since January 7th, 1994, which was also their only other win in 12 trips to Utah.
"We are just playing well," Hardaway said. "We're playing well on the offensive end, we know we can play defense. We're executing on the offensive end and that's what we need to do and that's what we've been doing."
Karl Malone scored 26 points for the Jazz, who had their seven-game winning streak snapped and lost for the first time in February. Utah fell to 24-5 at the Delta Center.
Trailing by four points midway through the third quarter, the Heat gained control with an 18-2 spurt. P.J. Brown scored six of his 10 points in the burst, which Eric Murdock capped with a layup to give Miami a 74-62 lead with 2:15 left in the period.
The lead was 10 entering the fourth quarter and 81-74 early in the period. But the Heat used a 10-2 run, capped by Dan Majerle's jumper, to build their biggest lead at 91-76 with 6:13 remaining. Utah quickly answered by scoring 10 of the next 11 points to get within 92-86 on a jumper by Malone with 4:25 to go.
Miami built its lead back to 96-88 before Malone converted a three-point play to slice the deficit to 96-91 with 2:15 left. Mourning responded with a dunk, but Utah ran off the next five points to close within 98-96 on Bryon Russell's two free throws with 1:06 to play.
"Miami is too talented to give them that sort of lead," Utah forward Adam Keefe said. "They played well and it's very difficult to come back from 10 or 12 points back. You can't do that against good teams. It works out sometimes against poor teams but against good teams you can't do it."
The Jazz kept closing and got within 103-102 with 15 seconds left after John Stockton buried the second of his two straight three-pointers. After Hardaway hit a free throw, Malone missed inside and Lenard got the rebound and was fouled. He missed both foul shots, but Stockton's shot from near midcourt at the buzzer was off the mark.
"It was a real good win, obviously," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "We played well against a real good team on the road. When you play good games they are going to be a little bit harrowing and close. You know they are going to come back us. They almost came all the way back."
Lenard had 15 points in the first half, helping the Heat to a 53-50 advantage.
Majerle finished with 18 points and Murdock contributed 11 for the Heat, who shot 50 percent (36-of-72) from the field. Mourning and Brown grabbed nine rebounds apiece, helping the Heat to a 44-38 advantage on the boards.
Jeff Hornacek scored 14 points, Stockton had 12 points and 10 assists, and Shandon Anderson chipped in 12 points for the Jazz, who shot 46 percent (38-of-83).
