GAME RECAP
Red-hot Michael Jordan scored 45 points and Scottie Pippen added 23 and 10 assists, leading the Chicago Bulls to their 16th straight home win, 106-100 over the Houston Rockets.
On target for his unprecedented 10th scoring title, Jordan shot 16-for-29 and has scored 40 points or more six times in his last 13 games, with the Bulls winning all six. He has 155 career regular-season games with at least 40 points.
Pippen had his best game since returning from a foot injury on January 10th, shooting 8-of-12 from the field, including 4-of-5 from three-point range. After scoring just 25 points in his first two games, he has averaged 22 per game over his last three outings.
Luc Longley added 10 points and six rebounds and Dennis Rodman seven assists for Chicago, which has won five of its last six overall and has beaten the Rockets at home in each of the last six meetings. The Bulls are a league-best 19-1 at home, with their only loss November 12th against Washington.
Charles Barkley scored 35 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and rookie Rodrick Rhodes had a career-high 15 points for Houston, which never led and has dropped five of its last six overall. The nationally televised game lost some of its luster as the Rockets were without injured All-Stars Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler.
"We don't take any good feelings out of keeping the game close. We came here to win. We made too many mental mistakes and physical errors to get it done," said Barkley. "The only positive we take out of the game is that it's over. There's no room for error on our team playing without Hakeem and Clyde."
The Bulls shot a season-high 54 percent (41-for-76) from the field, including 8-for-11 from three-point range. Chicago also hit 16-of-19 free throws.
"I think you see the reason why I will be happy not coaching next year," said Chicago coach Phil Jackson. "In the fourth quarter you saw players just backing the ball in, getting fouled, and going to the free-throw line. It makes for a never-ending game and bad basketball. There's no flow to a game like that."
Houston also shot 54 percent (34-of-63) and held a 35-28 edge on the glass, limiting league leader Dennis Rodman to five rebounds.
"I'm proud of the way we played and the fact that we didn't splinter or fall apart," said Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "There were several pivotal times when we could have quit but instead we fought back. The difference in the game was Jordan. He was phenomenal. Every shot they needed, he hit."
The Bulls took an 82-70 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Rockets put together an 11-2 spurt to pull within 90-87 with 6:42 remaining on two free throws by Othella Harrington, who had six points in the run.
Jordan answered with a three-pointer, and after Pippen and Barkley traded foul shots, Jordan hit another three-pointer at the 5:13 mark to give the Bulls a 97-88 lead.
The Bulls built their lead to 102-91 as Jordan fed Pippen for a fast-break layup with 3:38 remaining. Houston cut the deficit to 104-100 with 38 seconds left but got no closer.
"We're like two brothers on the opposite side. Out there on the court we're always trying to jockey for better position and to outdo the other guy," said Jordan, on his rivalry with Barkley. "We are great friends to some degree, but we play like we are enemies. There's always a smile and a lot of heart put in it when we go up against each other."
Jordan scored 16 points in the first quarter to help the Bulls to a 34-18 lead. The last time the game was tied was 4-4, on a jumper by Barkley with 10:47 to go.
The Bulls increased their 56-45 halftime lead to 67-51 at 8:08 of the third quarter when Jordan pulled up for a fast-break jumper, but Houston responded with a 12-2 burst, pulling within 69-63 on Barkley's three-pointer with 4:34 left.
"We allowed them to get back in the game. Basically, we had a chance to blow them out but we didn't finish our shots in the fourth quarter," said Pippen. "When you play a team with Charles on it, it's always going to be a tough game and a battle."
