GAME RECAP
Jamal Mashburn scored 18 points and Tim Hardaway added 17 and 13 assists as the Miami Heat used a balanced attack to avenge a Christmas Day loss and hand the Chicago Bulls their worst loss of the season, 99-72.
Alonzo Mourning recorded 16 points and eight rebounds and P.J. Brown added 12 and eight as the Heat placed all five starters in double figures and won for the fourth time in their last seven home meetings with the Bulls. Miami lost, 90-80, at Chicago on Christmas Day and the Bulls eliminated the Heat in five games in last season's conference finals.
"They kicked our (butts), there's no sugar coating. We should be embarrassed," said Chicago guard Ron Harper, who was held to four points and four assists. "I've been the league 13 years and that was an (butt) kicking."
"This is not the playoffs, this is a regular-season game," said Hardaway. "When we beat them in the playoffs then we can talk about overcoming them. It was an (butt)kicking, but they whupped our (butt) plenty of times. Four to one in the playoffs, 3-0 in the playoffs. Michael Jordan scored 50 here one night, so we've taken our share."
Jordan scored 26 points on 12-of-27 shooting and Dennis Rodman added 10 points and 17 rebounds for Chicago, which lost for just the second time in 13 games. Aside from Jordan, the Bulls shot just 36 percent (20-for-55) from the field and fell to 6-10 on the road.
Chicago coach Phil Jackson was ejected with 3.9 seconds to go in the second quarter after he charged onto the court to argue a technical foul on Rodman. Rodman was called for a technical after shoving Mourning to the ground after a basket.
"I thought what he did was uncalled for," Mourning said. "He's going to hurt someone seriously and I don't want it to be me. We went out as a team and got the job done in all facets of the game. Our transition play broke it open for us. Blowing them out was like a little extra gravy."
"The 18-million dollar man got pissed off, so what," said Rodman about Mourning. "Zo is a great competitor, he wants to be a big intimidator. He elbowed me first, but like the referees say `I didn't see the first one, I saw the second one.' We played like teenagers, but it's one of 82, so it's no big deal. If we lost a seven-game series I'd be disappointed."
The Bulls shot 56.5 percent in the first period and held a 28-20 advantage. Jud Buechler, who had seven points off the bench, made a 20-footer to give Chicago its biggest lead 32-22 with 10:45 left in the second.
Isaac Austin's dunk in the midst of a 14-0 surge gave the Heat the lead for good, 36-34, with 5:32 remaining in the second. Mashburn had eight points in the run that ended with Mourning's tip-in for a 48-37 cushion with 1:34 left in the second.
Voshon Lenard, who had 13 points, hit a three-pointer to give Miami a 67-47 cushion with 5:38 to go in the third. The Heat had their biggest lead at 95-63 when Dan Majerle hit a three-pointer with 3:36 left in the game.
