GAME RECAP
Shawn Kemp scored 11 of his 21 points in the third quarter and the Cleveland Cavaliers got a big boost from their bench as they handed the Chicago Bulls their worst loss in nearly two years, 101-80.
Kemp took control after the Cavaliers had built a 52-38 halftime lead. His outburst helped Cleveland open a 25-point lead late in the quarter and cruise to their highest-scoring game of the young season. The Cavs have won just two of their last nine meetings with the Bulls.
Earlier, reserves Cedric Henderson and Mitchell Butler fueled a second-quarter charge that broke open a close game. Henderson, a rookie forward, scored 10 points and Butler added 11, both season highs.
"Today was the first day I really got loose on the court since the preseason," said Butler, who was 5-of-5 from the field. "My energy was high and I felt like I was getting to the right spots on the court."
Michael Jordan struggled to 19 points for the Bulls, who absorbed their worst loss since a 104-72 setback at New York on March 10th, 1995. Chicago is 0-3 on the road after winning 30 games away from home last season.
"We don't seem to have much heart on the road, as we have at home," said Jordan, who shot 7-of-17 from the field. "We certainly seem like an expansion team on the road."
"I don't know if we've been beaten this badly for a long time," Bulls coach Phil Jackson said. "We came out there and nothing seemed to work for us tonight. It seemed like we were running in the mud and they were running fast breaks."
Bulls forward Dennis Rodman started but played very little after the first period, finishing with five rebounds in a scoreless 12 minutes.
"If they are going to play me like that, don't play me," Rodman said. "I don't even want to be there. It's going to be a long season for the Bulls. I hope it ends quickly. There is no goal out there and no interest (with)in this team. They are just going through the motions. Concentration is not there but Michael is always focused."
Rodman had been at odds with Jordan and Jackson, but Jackson sided with Rodman against female rookie referee Violet Palmer, who called two early fouls against his rebound leader.
"No big deal. Just part of the game," Rodman said. "The NBA has changed a lot and it takes a lot of interest away from the game."
"Rodman got two quick whistles and then the game got out of hand," Jackson said. "Rodman is not a scorer and we needed some scoring. But we had no punch off the bench. Palmer made a lot of mistakes, especially on charging and hooking calls."
Jordan scored 10 points in the opening quarter, but Kemp and Wesley Person led a balanced attack with six apiece as the Cavs opened a 27-23 lead. Person finished with 17 points.
Henderson, a second-round pick from Memphis, scored six points in a 9-1 burst that began the second quarter. His two free throws gave Cleveland a 36-24 lead with 8:27 remaining before halftime.
The Cavs shot 64 percent (9-of-14) in the period while holding the Bulls to 25 percent (4-of-16) and making seven steals.
"We turned the ball over and we weren't alert or sharp at the offensive end of the court," Jackson said.
Kemp had 11 points in the first 10 minutes of the third period, including a dunk that gave Cleveland a 73-48 lead with 3:29 to go. Cleveland led 81-63 entering the fourth quarter and opened its largest lead at 99-72 on a dunk by rookie Derek Anderson with four minutes to play.
"It was one of those games where we were making shots," Cavs coach Mike Fratello said. "We had some terrific things happen within the team. A couple of guys stepped up and made some shots at key times. We moved the basketball."
Zydrunas Ilgauskas scored 11 points and rookie Brevin Knight added 10 for the Cavs, who shot 55 percent (41-of-74) from the field. Kemp grabbed nine rebounds.
"We lost that last game (in ovetime to Atlanta) and we wanted to win tonight," Kemp said. "We wanted to prove to ourselves that we could play at that level."
Luc Longley and Jason Caffey scored 14 points apiece for the Bulls, who shot under 37 percent (31-of-84) and held a 46-38 rebounding advantage. Caffey added eight rebounds.
"It was one of those games where we were making shots," Cavs coach Mike Fratello said. "We had some terrific things happen within the team. A couple of guys stepped up and made some shots at key times. We moved the basketball."
