Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Rookie LeBron James played with veteran poise down the stretch. James contributed 27 points, nine rebounds and nine assists and keyed the decisive fourth-quarter run as the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Seattle SuperSonics, 104-96, for a rare road victory. Zydrunas Ilgauskas added 17 points and 10 rebounds in just 21 minutes for the Cavaliers, who snapped a five-game losing streak away from Gund Arena and improved the Eastern Conference's worst road record to 3-18. Cleveland held just an 84-83 edge before James made a layup with 8:02 remaining. He added a baseline jumper 21 seconds later, made a full-court pass to Darius Miles for a dunk and capped the 10-0 burst with a dunk off a steal with 6:05 to play. "This was a very good performance from him," Cavaliers coach Paul Silas said. "I played him 24 minutes in the first half - that's a little bit more than I would have liked - but when we needed it he provided it. He has not been rebounding as I would have liked but tonight he came through and was close to a triple-double." "We allowed him to just walk up and do pretty much what he wanted," Sonics coach Nate McMillan said. "We put no pressure on the ball. If you allowed anyone to get into a threatening position as LeBron did, and pretty much the whole team did, you won't stop anybody." The Cavaliers took their biggest lead, 99-86, on a 3-pointer from Dajuan Wagner with 3:57 to play. The Sonics got no closer than six points thereafter. "The biggest concern for us (is) can we maintain our confidence coming down the stretch?" James said. "Tonight we did that. We have been in so many games this year that if we can just do that down the stretch, we can win a lot more." Ray Allen scored 25 points and Vladimir Radmanovic added 21 and 13 rebounds for the Sonics, who had won their last four home games. Seattle committed 18 turnovers, which Cleveland converted into 22 points. The Sonics scored just seven points off 10 Cavaliers giveaways. "We just didn't execute," Allen said. "I can't say they did anything to us that I haven't seen from any other team. They just sat back and they were solid on defense and we made mistakes on offense." The Sonics were wearing bright yellow throwback jerseys. Their players had their socks pulled up to their knees. Cleveland took the lead for good, 82-81, with 9:29 remaining on a runner in the lane by Miles, who scored six of his 12 points in the fourth quarter.
