Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Playing Joe Johnson down the stretch is starting to pay dividends for the Phoenix Suns. Johnson scored 11 of his season-high 23 points in the fourth quarter, leading the Suns to a 100-92 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers. Johnson reached double digits for the 11th straight game as he benefits from seeing more minutes in the final period. In this one, he logged 11 minutes in the fourth quarter and hit a clutch 3-pointer that gave the Suns a 78-68 advantage with 8 1/2 minutes to play. After Philadelphia used an 11-4 burst to get within three points, Johnson scored eight points in the final three minutes. "I don't think that hitting my season high is an important thing right now, but it will help give us some momentum for me going into the next few games," Johnson said. "The important thing is we didn't lay down to Philadelphia after three quarters tonight." Shawn Marion collected 26 points, nine rebounds and five assists for the Suns, who avoided another collapse down the stretch and improved to 3-7 under new coach Mike D'Antoni. "I thought that the last quarter, we did make some big shots," said D'Antoni, whose team let a 17-point slip away in Friday's loss to Boston. "We finished the game off the way that it is supposed to be played." "It feels good with our situation and with how we have been playing," Suns guard Stephon Marbury added. Philadelphia fell to 2-5 since superstar Allen Iverson went down with a swollen right knee. The 76ers lost guard Aaron McKie to a hamstring injury in the third quarter. Philadelphia nearly battled back from a 19-point deficit, getting within 55-48 at halftime and 78-74 before Johnson finished off the 76ers. "Our effort to start the game wasn't there," Philadelphia coach Randy Ayers admitted. "We turned the ball over early and got behind early in the game. And with the numbers we have, it's hard to sustain a greater effort when you're behind by 16 to start the second quarter." The 76ers also shot poorly from the free-throw line. They made 21-of-31 foul shots and missed 10 in the final quarter.
