Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Paul Pierce scored 13 of his 36 points in the final five minutes as the Boston Celtics extended the Chicago Bulls' road losing streak to 22 games with a 102-98 victory.

The victory, coupled with Indiana's loss at Orlando earlier in the day, pulled the Celtics into a tie with the Pacers for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with 13 games remaining.

"We are very happy to get that win," Boston interim coach Jim O'Brien said. "That's a very difficult team for us to guard. (And) they made Paul Pierce work his butt off to get those points."

Former Celtic Ron Mercer's jumper capped a 6-0 run that tied it, 86-86, with just over five minutes left. Pierce nailed a fallaway 3-pointer as the shot clock wound down to give Boston the lead for good with 4:36 to play.

"It was a tough shot," Pierce said. "I knew that the shot clock was winding down. Mercer was all over me. I tried to get a little space with my elbows and I knew if I just got a small look, I could just get it off."

Bryce Drew responded with a jumper but Pierce was fouled and converted both free throws for a 91-88 lead with 3:14 to go. Pierce had a layup and a jumper to make it 96-92 with 61 seconds remaining.

"Every game is tough for us," Pierce said. "We look at every game like a playoff atmosphere. Every game is crucial for us no matter who we are playing."

A free throw by Ron Artest pulled Chicago within 96-93 with 41 seconds to go but Pierce hit two free throws and Antoine Walker had a steal and a layup for a 100-93 advantage with 27 seconds to go.

"Pierce was terrific in the fourth quarter," Chicago coach Tim Floyd. "Offensively, we did some things well. But turnovers beat us. We just had too many turnovers at key times."

Walker finished with 21 points and Bryant Stith added 12 for Boston, which is trying to end a five-year playoff drought. The Celtics embark on a two-game road trip to Atlanta and Chicago on Tuesday before returning home to meet the Pacers on Friday.

"We have to take it one game at a time and not get caught up in who we are playing and who Indiana is playing," Walker said. "We have to come up with some big wins on the road as well as at home. We have to keep it tight until we lock up on Friday."

The Celtics shot 45 percent (34-of-75) and won for the fourth time in five games. Boston converted 26-of-32 free throws and made 8-of-20 3-pointers.

Mercer made 14-of-19 shots for 29 points and Elton Brand added 20 points and nine rebounds for the Bulls, whose last road win was a 104-86 triumph here on December 13.

Chicago committed 20 turnovers to offset 54 percent (39-of-73) shooting. Artest scored 15 points while Brad Miller grabbed 12 rebounds for the Bulls.

A three-point play by Fred Hoiberg capped a 7-0 run to give Chicago a 71-70 lead with just over two minutes left in the third quarter.

A basket by Brand gave Chicago its largest lead at 20-12 with 4:47 left in the first quarter.
