Game Story
SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Chris Webber had a career game with 51 points and 26 rebounds but the Sacramento Kings fell, 93-91, in overtime to the Indiana Pacers.
Webber shot 24-for-47 from the field to set a Sacramento era high for points. He scored nine points in a 14-3 run that closed the fourth quarter and forged an 89-89 tie.
The All-Star power forward hit the tying basket with 28 seconds left in regulation, making a driving layup and completing a three-point play after he was fouled by Jermaine O'Neal.
After O'Neal turned over the ball at the other end, Webber's half-court shot hit the rim at the buzzer.
"(Webber) was just fabulous," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "He was terrific all night. He made shots and went inside. The only thing that is kind of astonishing to me is that he took that many shots and the only free throw he or we shot in the second half or overtime was the one that tied the game."
In overtime, Sacramento scored first on Jon Barry's basket with 3:56 left for its first lead since the second quarter, but the Kings shot just 1-for-14 in the extra session.
Jalen Rose, Webber's former Michigan teammate, tied the game at 91-91 with 1:35 left and put Indiana ahead 18 seconds later with another basket.
Sacramento twice had a chance to tie or take the lead after Rose missed a pair of free throws with two seconds left. Predrag Stojakovic had an 18-foot jumper from the left corner blocked by Rose and Webber's tip failed to fall with two-tenths of a second left.
"It was a great game," said Webber, who was ejected in the first quarter from Tuesday's win over Phoenix. "I just wanted to win, personally.
"I was playing against a great friend of mine and it was just a tough loss tonight. The points will mean more when it's done, but right now, I can only think about losing. But it's something that down the road I'll think about."
O'Neal scored 20 points and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds and Rose finished with 19 points for the Pacers, who are 2-1 on their season-high six-game road trip. They raised their record against Western Conference teams to 4-10.
"I think what we finally showed ourselves tonight is that we are capable of playing at an elite level," coach Isiah Thomas said. "We executed and did the things we wanted to do tonight. We limited their transition baskets and they were 12 percent from the 3-point line."
Thomas also praised forward Derrick McKey, who held Webber scoreless in the final five minutes.
"He was just awesome," Thomas said. "You get credit in this league for scoring a lot of points or doing a lot of flashy highlights, but if somebody could take some photos and video of Derrick McKey, you'll see how the game should be played from a defensive standpoint."
"I just tried to make Webber work as much as I could and not let him get in the sweet spot on the post because he did have it going," McKey said. "He got his numbers but we kept everybody else pretty calm, so that definitely helped. If they would have had somebody else have a big game we could have been in trouble."
Vlade Divac had 13 points and eight rebounds and Jason Williams added 10 for Sacramento, which fell to 14-3 at home -- with all the losses coming in overtime. The Kings have lost two of their last three games, as all three have gone into overtime.
"The last four games, we've had a lot of rough games, a lot of emotional games and we needed the end of this game, and we didn't do it," Adelman said. "Tonight, it took us too long to get going, and they pretty much controlled the tempo of the game throughout. We did a great job of coming back with six minutes and having a chance to win it."
Indiana jumped out to a 15-7 lead with 7:08 left in the first quarter on two free throws by Sam Perkins and took its largest lead, 57-45, on Reggie Miller's 3-pointer with 9:15 remaining in the first half.
Miller collected 18 points and seven rebounds and Travis Best came off the bench to chip in 11 points and six assists for the Pacers, who shot just 39 percent (31-for-80) from the field. Indiana's reserves outscored Sacramento's, 23-10.
Stojakovic contributed just seven points and seven rebounds and Doug Christie had no points, one rebound and one assist before fouling out. Both players are averaging over 10 points per game for the Kings, who shot 37 percent (39-for-106).
