Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Vin Baker, a 42 percent shooter, got a favorable bounce on an 18-foot jumper at the buzzer as the Seattle SuperSonics posted a wild 104-102 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

With time running out, Brent Barry passed to Baker on the right wing. Baker's fallaway jumper caromed off the front of the rim as the clock expired, seemingly forcing overtime. But the ball bounced high in the air and hit the top of the backboard before dropping through, giving the Sonics their second straight victory.

"I think it was a real blessing the way the game ended," Baker said. "Charlotte is an excellent basketball team. I just wanted to be involved in the fourth quarter and help give our team a chance to win the game."

"With that shot falling, I just think we were rewarded because the team has played hard," Seattle coach Nate McMillan added. "We didn't play our best basketball, but we played hard. We just kept hanging and hanging, and finally we got a break."

Still without 7-foot forward Elden Campbell, who is sidelined with an inflamed right bursa sac, the Hornets fell to 0-2 on a six-game road trip following a season-high seven-game winning streak.

"That's just part of basketball," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said of the winning shot. "You're going to win some when you shouldn't and you're going to lose some when you shouldn't. That was the luck of the draw. That's all that was."

Hornets guard Baron Davis had a different reaction.

"Merry Christmas, that's all I can say," he said. "Merry Christmas."

"I actually didn't see it go in," Baker added. "I thought it was off. When I saw it hit the top, I just started to get my mind into overtime. Then I looked back and it was in. That's a great way to end a Saturday, going into the new year."

The Hornets also were without Campbell when they opened their road trip with a 91-87 loss on Thursday in Sacramento.

"Elden is a big body," Silas said. "He was really playing well offensively and defensively before he went down. When you're missing him, you're missing a big part of your lineup. You take anybody's center off their team and they're going to suffer."

Gary Payton scored 21 points and Barry added 18, including a 3-pointer that gave Seattle a 98-95 lead with 57 seconds remaining.

David Wesley, who had 24 points for Charlotte, drilled a 3-pointer from the left wing to tie it, 102-102, with 8.4 seconds left.

The hotly contested game featured 20 lead changes. Charlotte went ahead for the final time, 92-91, on Jamal Mashburn's runner in the lane with 3:40 left.

P.J. Brown had 18 points and a season-high 17 rebounds for the Hornets, while Davis contributed 17 points.

Baker, who finished with 15 points, hit a pair of jumpers to give Seattle a 95-92 lead before Davis made 1-of-2 foul shots and a driving layup to tie it with 1:36 to go.

After Barry's 3-pointer -- his only basket of the second half -- Baker answered Davis' short jumper with a spin move on the left baseline to make it 100-97 with 30 seconds remaining.

The Sonics had five double-figure scorers as Patrick Ewing contributed 15 points and Lewis 14. Barry and Payton also handed out 10 assists apiece.

Seattle shot 51 percent (42-of-83) from the field, including 9-of-13 from beyond the arc, to sweep the season series. The Sonics posted a 102-94 victory in Charlotte on November 9.

Charlotte led by as many as 10 points in the first quarter before settling for a 33-25 edge. But the Hornets managed only 19 points in the second period, allowing Seattle to grab a 53-52 halftime lead.
