Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Lamar Odom led a stunning comeback by scoring 13 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter to rally the Los Angeles Clippers to a 110-106 victory over the Denver Nuggets, who have lost seven straight games.

The Clippers appeared on their way to yet another loss, trailing 92-78 with 10:28 to play. But Odom and guard Derek Anderson combined to scored 18 straight Los Angeles points down the stretch. It was capped by a 28-foot bomb by Odom which gave the Clippers a 106-103 lead with 2:04 remaining.

Denver closed within two on a free throw by Chris Gatling and had a chance to tie after a Clippers' turnover with 1:04 left. But Antonio McDyess, who had a fantastic game, was whistled for an offensive foul and received a technical for arguing the call.

Eric Piatkowski, who scored a career-high 31 points on 11-of-15 shooting, hit the technical foul shot and Odom added two free throws, giving the Clippers a 109-104 lead with 52 seconds to play.

Nick Van Exel pulled the Nuggets within three on a driving layup with 14 seconds left but Odom hit another free throw to secure the victory, giving the Clippers consecutive wins for the first time since December 22-26, when they won three straight.

"I knew we were still in the game," Odom said. "I could tell the way the game was going. I think they were a little tired from playing the Lakers last night."

"Whenever you're out there shooting well, it feels good," said Piatkowski. "We're running a lot of different plays. In the past we really got bogged down inside. But we're moving the ball right now and getting open looks. Everyone's contributing and we're having fun."

McDyess had 31 points on 14-of-17 shooting for Denver, which had won the last four meetings with Los Angeles. Their seven-game slide has put an end to any realistic hopes of making the playoffs, leaving only a mathematical chance.

"This is a sad loss for us," McDyess said. I never expected to come in here and lose to the Clippers. this is dissapointing to the whole team. Our heads are all down -- this is the lowest point of the season."

"We have no shot at the playoffs," Denver coach Dan Issel said. "We haven't been a good road team all year. We have to work harder to get back on track because we're not playing real well."

After battling to a 55-55 tie at the half, Denver started the third quarter apparently determined to end its slide. McDyess collected 13 points in the period and the Nuggets hit 68 percent (13-of-19) of their shots to take an 86-76 lead in the final quarter.

McDyess ignited a 7-0 run which put the Nuggets ahead 77-70 at the 4:02 mark and finished the quarter with a three-point play.

Piatkowski opened the fourth with two free throws but Denver reeled of six straight points to take a 14-point advantage. The Nuggets appeared well on their way to victory and a basket by Gatling put them up 99-88 with 7:14 to play.

But Odom and Anderson dominated the game from that point on and Denver seemed helpless to stop the duo.

"Odom is a big, strong kid," Issel said. "He did an excellent job. He made some big shots down the stretch, especially that 3-pointer. He was five feet behind the line."

"I know it took some momentum from them," Odom said. "Sometimes, it can be the littlest play but it can be a momentum builder and I think that's what the 3 was."

In an effort to shake up underachieving center Michael Olowokandi, Clippers coach Jim Todd started forward Pete Chilcutt at the pivot. Chilcutt was a non-factor in 16 scoreless minutes but Olowokandi came off the bench for 12 points and was decidedly more active on the defensive end.

Denver forward George McCloud returned to action after serving a one-game suspension for an off-court incident with Orlando's Ron Mercer on Saturday. McCloud had seven points and was only 1-of-6 from 3-point range.

Anderson finished with 20 points and Maurice Taylor added 14 for Los Angeles, which shot 53 percent (40-of-76) from the floor, 9-of-16 from behind the arc and hit 21-of-25 free throws.

Gatling had 19 points and Van Exel collected 16 for the Nuggets, who shot 57 percent (44-of-77) but surrendered 26 points off 21 turnovers.
