Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago Bulls are and always will be the team of the 1990s. But for one forgettable night, they were the team in the 40s.
The Bulls became the first team since the advent of the shot clock in 1954 to fail to break 50 points, suffering an 82-49 loss to the Miami Heat.
Led by Michael Jordan, Chicago won six championships in eight years. But Jordan retired before this season and the rebuilding process reached its low point. Thirty times in his illustrious career, Jordan scored more points than the Bulls did tonight.
In fact, the only thing about this game that remotely resembled the Jordan era was the halftime score -- 45-23, the two numbers he wore for the Bulls.
"MJ will call me tomorrow and laugh," said Bulls guard Ron Harper, one of the few holdovers from the dynasty. "He'll say, `Man, I'm not playing no more.'"
"Anybody who has a brain knows what's going on in Chicago," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "They turned the team over completely and they're not looking to set any records."
Chicago fell six shy of the previous league low set by Indiana against San Antonio on March 29, 1998. Ironically, the lowest total for any game with a shot clock was at the United Center, when the Bulls shut down the Utah Jazz, 96-54, in Game Three of the 1998 NBA Finals.
"Tonight was just another chapter of the 50 chapters this season," said center Bill Wennington, another holdover. "It's not fun to have this record."
Chicago had two chances in the final 20 seconds to eclipse 50 points. Keith Booth had a ball slapped away from him but Miami lost it out of bounds. Heat forward Mark Strickland stole the ensuing in-bounds pass and ran out the clock.
The Bulls also set an NBA record for fewest baskets with 18. They shot just 23 percent (18-of-77), including 0-of-9 from 3-point range, and made just 13-of-24 free throws.
"I can live with this, moreso than the Orlando game a couple of weeks ago (a 115-68 loss) where we gave up layup after layup after layup," Bulls coach Tim Floyd said.
Tim Hardaway scored 22 points and Alonzo Mourning added 19 for the Heat, who won their fourth straight game. En route to NBA titles in 1996 and 1997, Chicago ousted Miami from the playoffs.
Miami scored the first 15 points and things just got worse for Chicago. The Bulls did not score until a free throw by Mark Bryant with 4:15 left and did not score from the field until Dickey Simpkins threw in a hook with 2:57 to go.
"I just wanted to go out there and establish ourselves early and get the win," said Mourning, who had seven blocks. "That was our main objective."
"We tried to go inside early and we had three or four shots contested," Floyd said. "I thought they basically took us out of what we were doing by how the game started."
Hardaway's three-point play made it 38-18 with 5:05 left in the second period. His 3-pointer extended to 57-27 with 6:38 to go in the third quarter.
Riley emptied his bench at the start of the fourth quarter but that did not make it any easier for the Bulls. With less than six minutes remaining, Miami still had twice as many points as Chicago.
"Yes, we knew there was a record to be set," Hardaway said. "When we came out at the end, Dan Majerle and I said to the guys, `Just play defense.' We have a chance to be a part of history."
In the final six minutes, the Bulls committed three turnovers while missing a dunk, four layups and two free throws.
Jamal Mashburn scored 14 points for the Heat, who shot 41 percent (30-of-73) and held a 54-43 rebounding advantage.
