Game Recap

Vlade Divac answered Reggie Miller's vicious elbow of a week ago with a different knockout blow, scoring 22 points and combining with Glen Rice for 10 points in a crucial fourth-quarter run as the Charlotte Hornets defeated the Indiana Pacers, 96-89.

Divac, who briefly was knocked unconscious when Miller delivered an elbow under his chin in Indiana's 133-96 victory on Friday, grabbed 11 rebounds and scored six points in a 10-0 burst that expanded a one-point lead to 94-82 with three minutes left.

The Pacers, who had scored over 100 points in each of their past two games, managed just 33 in the second half and spent the last 6:29 of an awful fourth quarter without a basket.

Rice scored 20 points, Anthony Mason netted 18 and 13 rebounds and David Wesley dished out a career-high 15 assists as Charlotte erased an early 17-point deficit and denied the Pacers a franchise high-tying 52nd win.

"It was really a tough game with a lot of physical, tough play and big shots," said Wesley. "If I can throw out that many assists, that means guys are hitting their shots. If we keep doing what we did tonight, we have a good postseason to look forward to."

Not targeted for retaliation, Miller finished with 19 points on a meager 5-of-14 effort from the field. Travis Best also totaled 19 but point guard Mark Jackson missed 11 shots and went scoreless for Indiana, which had a three-game road winning streak halted.

"The Hornets' shooters, they made the shots in the second half and we did not respond," said Jackson. "They stepped it up on both ends of the court and we didn't. They outrebounded us and outshot us, it's that simple."

The win gave the Hornets a 3-1 season series edge and moved them within 3 1/2 games of third-place Indiana in the Eastern Conference standings.

The Pacers pulled within 83-82 on Travis Best's three-pointer with 6:30 to go. But Divac knocked down a pair of jumpers around a free throw and a three-pointer by Rice. The duo each added a foul shot before Indiana's Chris Mullin hit a free throw to end the spurt.

Charlotte fell behind by 17 points in the second quarter before gaining the lead in the third period. Indiana's Jalen Rose scored the final nine points of a 23-4 burst, including a jumper with 4:59 remaining in the first half that gave the Pacers a 49-32 advantage.

The Hornets crept within nine at the half before surging ahead late in the third quarter. After Dale Davis gave Indiana a 63-57 edge with a lay-in, Charlotte used a 15-3 run to sprint out to a 72-66 lead with three minutes left in the period. Matt Geiger scored five points and Bobby Phills four in the surge.

"It was key for us to come out big tonight," Geiger said. "They had beat us pretty bad. A lot of the media hyped up the game, but we just wanted to win. This is what we need to do."

Geiger finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Phills added nine and six as Charlotte shot 51 percent (40-of-78) from the field and held a commanding 46-31 edge on the boards.

Dave Cowens collected his first ejection as Hornets coach after the issue was decided, earning his second technical with 2:32 remaining and his team leading by 10.

The Pacers briefly took the lead in the fourth quarter, going ahead 79-78 when Davis dunked with 9:57 left. But Dell Curry answered with a jumper and Indiana went on to shoot just 21 percent (3-of-14) in the quarter and lose for just the third time in nine games.

Mullin finished with 14 points, Davis contributed 13 and nine rebounds and Rose scored 11 points for the Pacers, who committed just three turnovers.
