GAME RECAP

Shawn Kemp scored 21 points and had 10 rebounds as the Cleveland Cavaliers held the New Jersey Nets to just one basket over the last half of the third quarter, leading to a 95-81 victory.

With 6:06 left in the third quarter, Sherman Douglas made a layup to break the fourth tie of the quarter and give New Jersey its last lead at 57-55. But the Nets did not score again from the field until Douglas made another layup with 14 seconds to go.

Danny Ferry tied the game at 57-57 with a jumper before Kemp scored six consecutive points on a dunk, layup and jumper to give Cleveland a 63-57 lead at the 3:36 mark. Zydrunas Ilgauskas capped the 10-0 spurt with a tip-in 65 seconds later.

"The last time we played New Jersey they got a lot of layups against us. We didn't show any presence inside at all, so I wanted to be aggressive tonight," said Kemp. "I blocked some shots and grabbed some rebounds."

Derek Anderson had 18 points, six boards and seven assists off the bench and fellow rookies Cedric Henderson added 17 points and Ilgauskas 13 rebounds for Cleveland, which beat New Jersey for the second time in three meetings this season.

"We got some quick baskets that helped make our runs," Anderson said. "They were getting a lot of easy baskets off our turnovers in the first half, but once we controlled the ball and stopped turning it over, that made the difference."

"Derek Anderson played like I'm trying to get my guys to play," Nets coach John Calipari said. "Which is aggressive to the rim, being strong with the ball and coming up with loose balls, which he does as a rookie and is amazing."

Kendall Gill scored 21 points and Douglas added 20 and nine assists for New Jersey, which played without guard Sam Cassell, who suffered a shoulder contusion in Friday night's win over New York.

Cleveland shot 50 percent (41-for-82) from the field and 40 percent (4-for-10) from three-point range. New Jersey shot 40 percent (30-for-75) overall but just 14 percent (2-for-14) from behind the arc.

"I thought Cleveland did a terrific job of willing themselves to a win. We couldn't get our guys to that level," Calipari said. "Both teams had back-to-back games. We just couldn't pick up the pace the way we wanted to in the second half."

The Cavaliers built their lead to double digits in the fourth quarter after Anderson was flagrantly fouled by Gill on a drive. He hit one of two free throws and a jumper on the ensuing possession to give the Cavs a 76-64 edge with 9:48 remaining.

Rookie Keith Van Horn, who scored 15 points, hit a baseline jumper to make it 76-66, but Tony Dumas answered with a three-pointer at the 9:15 mark to give Cleveland a 79-66 lead.

Cleveland stretched its lead to 93-77 with 2:42 to go when Anderson hit a drive down the baseline.

"We didn't have the same energy we did last night against New York," said Van Horn. "I think the Cavs are the best defensive team we have played. They rotated a lot quicker than other teams. I don't know if they're doing it illegally, but every time I caught the ball they were right there."

Led by Henderson's 10 points, the Cavs grabbed a 28-23 lead at the end of the first quarter.

New Jersey regained the lead, 35-34, at the 7:55 mark of the second quarter, when Kerry Kittles hit a pair of free throws. The teams fought back and forth the rest of the half, with Gill's fast-break layup with 16 seconds remaining giving the Nets a 47-46 lead at the break.

Kemp registered his 1,000th career block, rejecting Van Horn's shot in the first quarter. Kemp blocked five shots.

"It was nice to get that block, because getting 1,000 means you've been doing it your whole career," Kemp said.
