GAME RECAP

Fred Hoiberg scored a season-high 20 points off the bench and the Indiana Pacers shot a season-high 63 percent from the field in a 107-81 rout of the Orlando Magic, their seventh win in eight games.

Rik Smits added 20 points and Chris Mullin 12 for Indiana, which connected on 41-of-65 floor shots. Hoiberg was 3-for-3 from three-point range and scored 15 of his points in the fourth quarter. Dale Davis grabbed nine rebounds and Mark Jackson handed out 11 assists.

"The guys did what I was hoping they would do, they played hard and they played well. When this team makes up its mind to play, they play the game the way it's supposed to be played," said Indiana coach Larry Bird. "This game is a reflection of how these guys came to practice on Christmas Eve. They came in and gave a hard 75 minutes and it carried over to today's shootaround. I thought they were in a good frame of mind coming into the game."

Substitutes Darrell Armstrong scored 16 points and Brian Evans 14 to lead Orlando, which was hampered by the absence of center Rony Seikaly, who made the trip but remained in the hotel with the flu. Danny Schayes started in place of Seikaly and contributed six points and two rebounds in 22 minutes.

Horace Grant added eight rebounds and Mark Price nine assists for the Magic, who had their losing streak reach a season-high five games. Orlando, which only shot 37 percent (31-for-85) from the field, last dropped five in a row from February 11th-27th of last season.

"We have a hard time winning here. They're a good team and they're well coached," said Orlando coach Chuck Daly. "We've got to pick people up in transition and make shots. When you face one of the top teams in the league with five of your top eight players out, you're going to get hosed. We were just overmatched in a lot of ways."

Led by Smits' 12 points, Indiana jumped to a 35-15 lead after one quarter, its best opening period of the season. The game was tied 2-2 when the Pacers went on a 16-4 spurt, with Smits scoring eight of those points.

The Magic trailed 18-9 when the Pacers exploded with a 15-0 run to take a commanding 24-point lead with 1:24 remaining. Jackson, who had eight assists in the quarter, opened the burst with a jumper. Reggie Miller scored six of his 11 points in the run, including a fast-break layup that finished it off.

Orlando got no closer than 17 points in the first half, pulling within 50-33 with 3:46 to go in the second quarter following a fast-break dunk by Armstrong. The Pacers led 59-37 at halftime, posting a season high for points in the first half.

Armstrong's three-pointer cut the deficit to 75-55 with 2:59 left in the third quarter, but the Pacers answered with a 16-5 burst, capped off by Hoiberg's free throws, to build a 91-60 advantage with 9:23 remaining in the game.

Indiana stretched its lead to 107-75 with 2:55 to go on a jumper by Travis Best.

"It felt good out there tonight. The starters were great and the bench came in, kept the lead and even built on it," said Hoiberg. "This was a great team effort. I felt good on defesne and my shots were dropping."
