GAME RECAP
Twin towers David Robinson and Tim Duncan combined for 36 points and 23 rebounds and Avery Johnson added 19 points as the San Antonio Spurs rallied for a season-opening 107-96 victory over the Denver Nuggets and new coach Bill Hanzlik.
Robinson, the All-Star center who missed all but six games last season with back and foot injuries, scored 21 points, including 11 in the third quarter, when the Spurs erased a six-point halftime deficit. He had 13 rebounds and four blocks.
"My shot didn't feel good in the first half," Robinson said. "It's mostly just timing. Just little things. They add up."
Robinson's injuries dropped San Antonio into the draft lottery and they chose Duncan with the top overall pick. The forward-center had 15 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks in his NBA debut.
"Tim Duncan could've been more aggressive offensively," Spurs coach Greg Popovich said. "I was scared to death going into the game. I knew Billy would have them playing hard. It was a good win, but then I've never had a bad win."
"Basically, it was not bad, but I could've played better," said Duncan. "It's good to finish one that actually counts. They're a very tough team. They have a lot of emotion going for them. I expected them to come out and give us a good game."
Rookie Bobby Jackson scored 27 points and Bryant Stith and Eric Williams added 17 apiece for the Nuggets, who have just two players who were with the team at the outset of last season. Hanzlik is a head coach for the first time after six years as an assistant with Charlotte and Atlanta.
"I thought in the first half we did a good job," Hanzlik said. "We competed hard and we defended well. In the second half, we got bogged down."
"Not bad, but I'd rather have the win," said Jackson, who shot 10-of-19 from the field and grabbed six rebounds. "We played hard but we were sluggish in the third quarter. They took advantage of our sluggish defense. We just have to learn from our mistakes. I'm not scared when I'm out there. I just go out and do my job."
Jackson scored 13 points as the Nuggets overcame 38 percent shooting (18-of-47) and took a 50-43 halftime advantage. But Robinson took over in the third quarter, scoring 11 points. A free throw by Johnson gave the Spurs the lead for the first time in the second half at 61-60 with 4:56 remaining.
"I came in at halftime disappointed," Robinson said. "The team gets a lot of energy from me and I was determined to make things happen in the second half."
A three-pointer by Jaren Jackson -- his only basket of the game -- gave San Antonio a 73-71 lead entering the fourth quarter. Denver was still within 79-77 after a basket by Williams with 9:08 to play, but Sean Elliott had a three-pointer and a basket around a hoop by Vinny Del Negro as the Spurs widened the lead to 86-77 with 7:18 remaining.
Bobby Jackson cut the deficit to 96-91 with 1:06 left, but two free throws by Johnson and a basket by Del Negro sealed the win, San Antonio's first in an opener since 1993.
"They scored seven quick points and we never could get the momentum back," Hanzlik said. "You get no points for being close and I think when we get to play that team again we can beat them."
Del Negro and Elliott scored nine points apiece for the Spurs, who shot 54 percent (40-of-74) from the field and held a 49-34 advantage on the glass.
Rookie Tony Battie scored 15 points for the Nuggets, who shot 42 percent (32-of-85). Center Dean Garrett, signed as a free agent to a five-year contract during the offseason, was 1-of-8 from the field and finished with two points, six rebounds and five fouls.
"Bobby Jackson looked like a seasoned veteran," Robinson said.
