G2 Esports plays with fire at the LoL-Worlds and burns itself

On the sixth day of the League of Legends World Cup, the favourites from Group A secure their ticket to the quarter-finals. Title favourite G2 Esports played too aggressively and was punished for it. The Europeans only finished second in the group behind the Korean team Griffin.

The way was already paved for first place, but G2 Esports lost his lead and first place in the table on the last matchday. The imaginative and creative team from Europe was too aggressive and uncontrolled that day. But they were punished by Korean runners-up Griffin. The Koreans won both the final match of the group stage and the deciding match.

G2 Esports had already gone into the matches too brashly and too daringly in the past games, but had been able to turn the matches around at first. On Friday evening, this was no longer the case. Two really clear defeats against Griffin ended the high flight of the undefeated team.

Too many individual mistakes

Especially G2’s youngster Marcin “Jankos” Jankowski could not keep his mistakes in check this evening. The Polish player tried a lot on this day, but he managed little of it. Already in the last match days, the youngster was often over motivated and missed the target. But in the games against Griffin, it was especially bad.

In the decisive moments of the early play process, G2 Esports too often dared too much Esports. The penalty followed immediately. Eleven deaths and only four meagre participation in his killings stood at the end of the two games on his account – a catastrophic balance for a player of his calibre.

Key players out of shape

The two previous key players of G2 Esports, Rasmus “Caps” Winther and Luka “Perkz” Perković, could not compensate for the failure of the team. In the first five games of the group, the two-star players were still in the best form and prevented already the one or other defeat. But in the last two matches, also the two most important men of G2 could not align anything.

It was already clear after the first match of the day that G2 Esports would make it to the quarter-finals. The Europeans managed to beat the underdog Hong Kong Attitude and, due to the group constellation, were already determined as quarter-finalists after four wins. The game against North America’s runners-up Cloud9 was also won. In the end, however, the Korean representative was too well prepared to reject any advance from G2. Although G2 Esports are now in the quarter-finals as runners-up in their group, they will have to face a different group winner in the quarter-finals and will have a harder draw than they had hoped.

The other results of the day

Griffin won every game dominantly on that day, as well as the G2 games. At no time did the Korean team run the risk of losing a match. It was a power demonstration of the griffins on today’s matchday. Griffin first overcame the helpless North Americans of Cloud9 before putting Hong Kong Attitude in their place.

Cloud9 and Hong Kong Attitude are eliminated. The two underdogs of the group were defeated in almost all matches against the favourites. Cloud9 took third place as the team won both matches with Hong Kong Attitude. The Asians did not win a game and were last in the group.
